Velleclaire is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Velleclaire is located at an altitude of 243 m above sea level, five kilometers northeast of Gy and about 25 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, on a hill on the northern edge of the Monts de Gy .
The area of the 4.13 km² municipal area comprises a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône . The northern part of the municipality is occupied by terrain with relatively weak relief, which is mainly used for agriculture. To the southeast, an approximately 100 m high step leads over to the plateau of the Monts de Gy. At this wooded height the highest point of Velleclaire is reached with 406 m. The heights of the Monts de Gy in the area of Velleclaire consist of sediments from the middle and upper Jurassic period , while the adjoining fore hills to the north are mainly made up of Cretaceous deposits. Topographically, the municipality belongs to the catchment area of the Petite Morte, but there are no above-ground running waters on the site because the rainwater seeps into the karst subsoil.
Neighboring municipalities of Velleclaire are Villers-Chemin-et-Mont-lès-Étrelles in the north, Oiselay-et-Grachaux in the east, Bucey-lès-Gy in the south and Vantoux-et-Longevelle in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages Velleclaire belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was incumbent on the Lords of Gy , who were dependent on the Archbishops of Besançon. Together with Franche-Comté , Velleclaire finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The parish does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Bucey-lès-Gy.
Attractions
The Velleclaire chapel was built in 1841. At the Mairie (parish hall) there is a statue of the Madonna from the 17th century.

With 109 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Velleclaire is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. During the entire 20th century the population decreased slowly but continuously (in 1886 there were still 148 people).
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Velleclaire was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are some local small businesses, especially in the precision engineering sector. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the vicinity.
The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road D474, which leads from Gray via Gy to Vesoul . Another road connection is with Vantoux.
