Ruhans is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Ruhans is located at an altitude of 295 m above sea level, about 18 kilometers south of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends north of the Ognon river valley , in a cleared island on the plateau south of the Quenoche valley, between the forest heights of Bois Lajus in the north and Les Grands Bois in the south.

The area of the 4.95 km² municipal area covers a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north-west. The central part of the area is crossed in a west-east direction by the Quenoche valley cut , which provides drainage to the Linotte . The flat valley low with fertile alluvial soils has a maximum width of 500 meters and averages 250 m. The valley of the Quenoche is flanked on both sides by plateau-like, wooded hills, which usually reach heights of 300 to 320 m. They mostly consist of limestone layers from the upper Jurassic period and are subdivided by short side valleys of the Quenoche. The plateau of Ruhans (up to 332 m) and the Grands Bois extend south of the valley. To the north, the community area extends into the forests of the Bois Lajus , in which the highest point of Ruhans is reached at 362 m.

Two hamlet settlements belong to Ruhans:

  • Millaudon (260 m) in the Quenoche Valley
  • La Villedieu-lès-Quenoche (310 m) in a cleared island in the Grands Bois

The neighboring parishes of Ruhans are Authoison in the north, Villers-Pater and Beaumotte-Aubertans in the east, Cirey and Rioz in the south and Quenoche in the west.

history

Remains of a Gallo-Roman country estate indicate an early settlement of the municipality. In the Middle Ages, Ruhans belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and within it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . It was subordinate to the Barony of Fondremand , while Ecclesiastical sovereignty lay with the Coming of La Villedieu-en-Fontenette. Together with Franche-Comté , Ruhans finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since the time of the French Revolution , Ruhans and Millaudon formed one community. The area changed in 1965 when the hamlet of La Villedieu-lès-Quenoche (1962: 17 inhabitants), previously an independent municipality, was merged with Ruhans. Today Ruhans is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 villages .

Attractions

The single-nave church of Ruhans was rebuilt in 1769. In Millaudon there is a lavoir (former wash house and cattle trough).

With 155 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Ruhans is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 70 and 110 people, there has been slight population growth since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Ruhans was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The Quenoche's hydropower was previously used to power three mills. The most important employer in the village today is a sawmill with around 35 employees. There are also some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Loulans-Verchamps to Quenoche. Another road connection is with Dournon.
