Josef "Joe Tiger" Pachler (born January 23, 1950 at Weißenberg near Ettendorf, Lavamünd municipality , Carinthia ) is a former Austrian boxer, three-time national champion (1972, 1973, 1981) and European welterweight champion (1978).

Boxing career

As an amateur, he was Austrian welterweight champion in 1972 and 1973. At the 20th European Championships in Belgrade in 1973, he lost in the preliminary round against the Polish champion Józef Stachowiak.

His first professional fight on November 11, 1973, Pachler won against the Italian Giampaolo Piras on points. 16 more victories followed, including against the former Central British champion Mickey Flynn, the later German champion Klaus Fuchs, the two-time German champion Jürgen Voss and the former Yugoslavian champion Young Griffo.

He suffered his first defeat as a professional on December 27, 1975, against the Nigerian Gray Ibekwe by technical knockout in round 5. This was followed by ten more victories in a row, including against the former German middleweight champion Klaus-Peter Tombers, the multiple Yugoslavian Master Branko Baraković and the French master Alain Ruocco. On July 9, 1976, he also managed to win points over his later conqueror and European champion Henry Rhiney from Great Britain.

On April 1, 1977 he lost surprisingly on points against the native Congolese Wa Bukasa, but beat his next four opponents in a row, including the Italian champion Vittorio Conte. On March 31, 1978 he boxed a draw in Bregenz against the former, two-time European light welterweight champion, the Turk Cemal Kamacı . Three months later he defeated Moussa Mukandjo and now got the chance to win the European welterweight title.

On August 18, 1978, he finally met the reigning European champion Jørgen Hansen in the Villach town hall . The fight ended controversially; After the final gong of the 8th round, Pachler was hit by a blow from the Dane and went down. According to many, Pachler is said to have exaggerated the impact significantly and deliberately stayed there in order to disqualify his opponent. However, since the blow clearly came after the round gong and Pachler apparently could not continue fighting, the Italian referee Angelo Poletti had to disqualify the title holder and declare Pachler the winner, who became only the third European champion in post-war Austrian professional boxing. The Wiener Arbeiter-Zeitung ran the headline in its August 20, 1978 issue (page 12); “The courageous Pachler is certainly not an exhausted professional, but when he was hit by Hansen in Villach after the gong, he only needed a moment of shock. Then he knew: on the ground, lay flat. And referee Angelo Poletti couldn't help but disqualify Hansen and award Pachler the title. European champion hc for an impeccable sportsman, but not least also for a clever tactician. "

But already in his first title defense fight on December 2, 1978, he lost the European title by technical knockout in the 10th round to the British Henry Rhiney, whom he had defeated in 1976. Then he lost against the undefeated Dane and later European champion Hans-Henrik Palm by technical knockout in the 9th round. He also lost the rematch against Hansen by a technical knockout in round 7. After losing points to the undefeated Swiss Jimmy Connelly, he defeated the Italian Guido Galletti by knocking out in round 4, winning against the Turkish Ömer Karadenis on points and beat the German Horst Schulze with a technical knockout.

On August 31, 1981 he played the last professional fight of his career; He became Austrian welterweight champion by winning points over Otto Zinöder. In total, he played more than 130 boxing matches.
