Vizeleutnant (Vzlt) is a rank of the higher non-commissioned officers ( staff sergeants ) in the Austrian Armed Forces and there at the same time the highest non-commissioned officer rank . The Vzlt was from 1924 to 1938 and has been reintroduced since 1965. It is the highest rank that can be achieved without a high school diploma and can be achieved by professional non-commissioned officers (employment group M BUO 1) and militia non-commissioned officers. The Vzlt is often used as a non-commissioned officer in charge of duty (spit). The Vzlt corresponds roughly to the Oberstabsfeldwebel in the German Bundeswehr .

The border of the uniform rank badges of the Vzlt is mottled silver and gold. The silver-gold shoulder clip with slipcase, which was previously only intended for vice lieutenants , is to be worn by all staff sergeants in the service groups M BUO 1 or UO 1 (militia sergeants), i.e. from staff sergeants upwards.

The practice came under criticism that until the introduction of the military service salary group, NCOs could be promoted to Vzlt as civil servants in the general administration with the best career and in C-valued post after 15 years of service, often skipping the ranks of staff and senior staff sergeants . It was not only the resulting “water top-heaviness” or “overbeventing” of the corps that was criticized, but also the fact that a 33-year-old could serve another 32 years until retirement without further prospects of promotion to have.
