The IKT - Institute for Underground Infrastructure gGmbH is an institute in Gelsenkirchen , the branch in Munich (IKT-Süd) that existed from 2007 onwards was given up in 2012.

In 1994, the previous institution, the Institute for Sewer Technology, was founded and is an affiliate of the Ruhr University Bochum and the Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences . It offers research activities as well as examination and consulting services . IKT deals with issues in the field of underground supply and disposal lines. The work area of ​​the IKT ranges from the testing of new construction methods to product testing and basic research .

As part of the IKT product test, products and services from the field of underground infrastructure are tested for their applicability and durability. The tests are carried out under real operating conditions and assessed neutrally. The results are published and provide private customers with indications of the quality of the products and services tested.

The IKT has been moderating the municipal property drainage network since September 2008 with the aim of realizing existing legal requirements jointly and in a citizen-friendly manner.

The IKT has been awarding the Golden Manhole Cover since 2002. This award is given annually to people who have made outstanding contributions to innovations in sewer technology.
