description

The Austrian thyme is a small shrub whose creeping stems usually end in terminal inflorescences . The flower-bearing stems are usually 5 to 15 (rarely up to 30) cm long and more or less herbaceous, upright to ascending. Mostly they are completely hairy, basal leaf tufts are missing. The leaves are usually wider than 1.5 mm. They are elliptical-lanceolate to inversely ovate, usually rounded at the tip, herbaceous and ciliate at the base. At least the lower leaves are petiolate.

The inflorescences are spherical or interrupted, the lowest false whorls are often separated from the rest. The bracts resemble the foliage leaves. The calyx is (rarely only 3.5 to) 4 to 5 mm long, the corolla tube is similar in length to the upper lip. The upper teeth are usually a little longer than wide and ciliate.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 56.
