Perithemis is a genus of thirteen species of dragonfly belonging to the subfamily Palpopleurinae and wasfirst describedby Hermann August Hagen in 1861. A dragonfly previously known as Libellula tenera servedas the generotype . The distribution area extends from south-eastern Canada to central Argentina .

features

Perithemis species are extremely small dragonflies and reach lengths between 17 and 29 millimeters. The yellowish, brownish or orange abdomen ( abdomen ) has a multitude of dark keels and trenches. The pterothorax , the part of the chest ( thorax ) to which the wings attach, is greenish or has two dark stripes. The wings of the males are orange or red. Those of the females are transparent or have various brown or orange bands. 

habitat

Perithemis - imagines come to ponds and marshes but sometimes along rivers before. In the sunshine, the males fly close to the water. When hunting, the animals sit on small branches near the water. The larvae mostly live on submerged vegetation.
