Elizabeth Gilbert (born July 18, 1969 in Waterbury ) is an American writer.

Life

Gilbert grew up in Connecticut , where her parents run a Christmas tree school . She has an older sister named Catherine (married to Catherine Murdock ) who is also a writer. Elizabeth Gilbert earned a bachelor's degree in political science from New York University .

She worked as a columnist for Spin and Gentlemen's Quarterly (GQ) magazines. She got the New York bar Coyote Ugly a lot of attention when she shared her experiences as a bartender for GQ . Their experiences formed the basis for the film Coyote Ugly .

Gilbert's literary career began in 1993 when Esquire magazine published one of her short stories. In 1997 the short story book Pilgrims (German: Elchgeflüster , 1999) was published, which was awarded the Pushcart Prize . This was followed three years later by the novel Stern Men (German: The Lobster War ). The Last American Man , her biography of the natural adventurer Eustace Conway , made it to the finals of the National Book Award in 2002. The travelogue Eat Pray Love deals with Gilbert's experiences and self-discovery journey in the Old World from the fall of 2003 to the summer of 2004 and was two years old published after her year abroad (the title remained unchanged in the German edition, with the attached subtitle: A woman looking for everything across Italy, India and Indonesia ). It has sold over seven million copies and has been translated into over 30 languages. Four years later he was made into a film with Julia Roberts as Elizabeth in the lead role (see Eat Pray Love ).

Elizabeth Gilbert lives in Hudson Valley . From 2007 to 2016 she was married to José Nunes. In Eat Pray Love , she describes how she met him at the end of her journey. Since June 2017 Gilbert was married to the Syrian musician and filmmaker Rayya Elias , who died of cancer in January 2018.
