Coyote Ugly (Cross-Reference: Coyote Ugly - You Want It All, Right Now ) is a film directed by David McNally and shot in the United States in 2000 . The main roles are played by Piper Perabo and Adam Garcia .

action

Violet comes from a small town in New Jersey where she works in a pizza place and everyone knows her well. Wanting to become a famous songwriter, she decides, against her father's advice, to move to New York . Her best friend Gloria drives her to her new apartment, which turns out to be a shabby dump. But this apartment has one advantage, namely a roof terrace on which Violet can compose her songs.

Violet leaves demo recordings of her pieces at various music producers , but these are unsuccessful. After an embarrassing incident with assistant chef Kevin O'Donnell, whose boyfriend passed him off as a music producer , she slowly begins to doubt whether moving to New York was the right decision. Her own performances, where she could present her songs, are unthinkable for Violet, as she has too much stage fright. According to her father, she shares this trait with her mother, who also made music, who has since passed away.

After her savings are stolen in a break-in, her money runs out. By chance she learns that there is a vacancy in the bar Coyote Ugly because one of the barmaids is starting a degree. But the Coyote Ugly, under the direction of Lil, is no ordinary bar: the barmaids dance on the bar, sing and drink with the guests, and it is not uncommon for the bar to be “ flambéed ” or for the barmaid Rachel to beat up bullying guests.

After a few teething problems, Violet becomes a full member of the “Coyotes” and is now known in the bar under the name “Jersey Nun”. When a fight looms one evening, she overcomes her stage fright and sings on the counter to the jukebox One Way or Another , which attracts the attention of the brawlers and prevents the fight. Kevin, with whom she starts a relationship, is also helpful. Kevin gets Violet a gig in another bar, but she lets it go in favor of her work at Coyote Ugly . When Kevin makes her a jealous scene at work, they split up. Her father also turns away, disappointed, when he visits her in the bar one evening and sees her revealingly dressed dancing on the counter.

One day Violet's answering machine received a message from a record company that seemed to have received their demo recording well. She is supposed to perform at a live event. Her father, who has been hit by a car in the meantime and is injured in the hospital, confesses to her that her mother did not avoid the stage because of stage fright, but because he asked her to.

Violet masters her performance despite stage fright and receives a contract as a songwriter. She gets back together with Kevin and her father has a new girlfriend. Finally she sings her songs with LeAnn Rimes on the counter of the Coyote Ugly , and her father dances to it.

production

For the film Coyote Ugly , which refers to a real bar of the Coyote Ugly chain in Manhattan, producer Jerry Bruckheimer hired director David McNally, who until then was only known through his advertising and video clips.

After numerous auditions for the main role, the choice fell on Piper Perabo, who until then had only played minor supporting roles. For the role of Violet, she had to take singing, guitar and piano lessons and also learn to dance and wait a while.

Travis Payne was selected for the choreography, who invented a separate dance combination for each of the actresses, which underlined their strengths.

Although the real Coyote Ugly is located in the middle of New York City, in addition to locations in New Jersey and Manhattan, it was preferably shot in Los Angeles. After researching numerous bars and pubs across the country, the designers decided to create their own bar which, while resembling the real Coyote Ugly , had its own style to match the story.

The film premiered in New York on July 31, 2000 and opened in US cinemas on August 4. In German-speaking countries it was shown in cinemas on September 7, 2000. The film was released on DVD in Germany on September 20, 2001; the Director's Cut was released around 4 years later on September 1, 2005.
