Kiyomi Kato

Kiyomi Katō ( Japanese 加藤 喜 代 美 , Katō Kiyomi ; born March 8, 1948 in Asahikawa , Hokkaidō ) is a former Japanese wrestler . He was a 1972 Olympic free style flyweight champion.

Career

Kiyomi Katō belonged to the world's elite freestyle wrestlers in the early 1970s. It was sponsored by the Sanshin Denki ( 三 信 電 気 , English Sanshin Electronics ) company. The 1.63 meter tall athlete competed in free style in the flyweight class, which at that time reached up to 52 kg body weight.

In 1970 he took part in an international championship for the first time. At the Asian Games in Bangkok , he finished second behind the Iranian Mohammad Ghorbani .

In 1971 he was also used at the World Cup in Sofia . After two wins he lost to the much more experienced Baju Baew from Bulgaria and Petre Ciarnau from Romania and ended up in 6th place in the flyweight division.

Kiyomi Katō then intensified his training and was in excellent shape at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . In a real triumphant advance he defeated eight competitors and became an Olympic champion in a superior style . In the decisive fight he did not give the Soviet wrestler Arsen Alachwerdijew a chance.

After the Olympic Games in Munich, Kiyomi Katō resigned, only 24 years old.
