geography

The place is 2.4 km west of the center of Monteriggioni and 13.5 km northwest of the provincial capital of Siena on the Via Francigena at 200 m. In 2001 it had about 140 inhabitants. The place is part of the Montagnola Senese mountain range and is located on a foothill of the Montemaggio mountain (671 m, also Monte Maggio , 671 m). The place name a Isola arose from the location of the monastery, which was surrounded by swamps, called Padule del Canneto , and thus appeared like an island (Isola).

history

The place was first documented as Castello di Borgonuovo (XVI Burgenove) by Sigeric the Serious on his way from Rome to Canterbury in 994. The abbey was first mentioned on February 4, 1001.

monastery

Today the place is mainly known for the Abbazia dei Santi Salvatore e Cirino monastery , which was built in 1001 with the adjoining hospital by Ava Lambardi di Staggia and expanded until 1062. The church, which then belonged to the diocese of Volterra , was consecrated in 1173 and at the end of the 14th century the buildings were provided with a defensive wall ring. The baptismal font dates from 1419. The large campanile probably comes from an earlier defense tower. Until 1445 the abbey was inhabited by the Benedictines , who left the monastery due to the frequent armed conflicts between Siena and Florence. From 1446 the abbey was then subordinate to the Monastero di Sant'Eugenio in Costafabbri (now part of Siena), about 2 km southwest of Siena. Today the church belongs to the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino .

To the left of the entrance of Santi Salvatore e Cirino is the small church Chiesa della Compagnia del Corpus Domini , which was built in the 16th century.

Works of art in the monastery

The work Madonna col Bambino e due committenti ei Santi Benedetto, Cirino, Donato, Giustina by Sano di Pietro (1476)

In the monastery are the works Madonna in trono con Bambino, cherubini, angeli e santi by Taddeo di Bartolo , the fresco Assunzione della Vergine by Vincenzo di Benedetto di Chele Tamagni (1520) and the winged altar Madonna col Bambino e due committenti ei Santi Benedetto, Cirino, Donato, Giustina by Sano di Pietro (main altar, made in 1476) can be admired. There is also a sarcophagus from Roman times which was converted into a reliquary for San Cirino at the end of the 12th century . The baptismal font is dated to 1419.

Badia a Isola Master

The abbey is named after the so-called Badia-a-Isola master , who designed the work Madonna col Bambino e angeli (also called Maestà ) here and which is now in the Museum Museo civico e d'arte sacra di Colle di Val d'Elsa located in Colle di Val d'Elsa .

Madonna della Neve

The Oratorio della Madonna della Neve is located a few meters south of the village at the foot of the Monte Maggio mountain. The building is now privately owned and no longer has any religious functions.

Casa Giubileo and La Porcareccia Monument to the Fallen

On March 28, 1944, the Montemaggio bloodbath ( Eccidio di Montemaggio , also called Battaglia di Montemaggio ) took place on Mount Montemaggio. 19 partisans were killed by the Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana and German troops. The partisans had quartered themselves in the farmhouse Casa Giubileo (approx. 2.5 km south of Badia a Isola) with the aim of sabotaging the Empoli – Siena railway line and the Via Cassia. The day before they captured an official of the Italian campaign and a German negotiator who wanted to exchange prisoners. On the morning of March 28th, the Casa Giubileo was besieged by the German troops. After the partisans ran out of ammunition, the house was taken. The partisans were brought to La Porcareccia (approx. 1 km northeast of Casa Giubileo and approx. 1.5 km southeast of Badia a Isola) and executed there. The monument to the fallen is now located here.
