history

The city was founded in Roman times as Fidentia on the Via Aemilia . A Celtic settlement already existed at this point. 41 BC The place received Roman citizenship through Octavian and became a Municipium .

With the fall of the Roman Empire, a dark period began for the city. It was repeatedly occupied and destroyed in the 5th century. Charlemagne was a strong patron. During his time, the body of Saint Donnino , a 3rd century Christian martyr , was also found in the city.

Under the new name, Borgo San Donnino, the city reappears in the sources in 923. In the travel description of Sigeric the Serious , Fidenza is mentioned as the 36th stage (XXXVI Sce Domnine) on the way back from Rome to Canterbury. In the Middle Ages, Fidenza was an important stopover on the famous Via Francigena .

From 1092 to 1102 the city was the residence of King Conrad of Italy , son of Emperor Henry IV , by whom he was declared deposed in 1098. During this time, the place received city rights, which were officially confirmed by Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa in 1162 . He transferred the rule to the Pallavicino family near Piacenza . As a result, the city was repeatedly the subject of conflicts between Parma and Piacenza, as it was strategically located on the Via Emilia and the Via Francigena.

From 1346 to 1447, the city repeatedly came under the rule of the Visconti of Milan . From 1449 to 1499 the new princes of Milan, the Sforza , ruled . The city was autonomous until 1556 when it became part of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza under the Farnese . In 1601 the city becomes a bishopric. When the family died out in 1731, the property went to the Bourbon King Charles III. from Spain across. After a brief period under France during the Napoleonic Wars, the city joined the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont by vote in 1859. During the fascist period the city developed enormously and in 1927 changed the name from Borgo San Donnino to Fidenza (relatinized). In May 1944 the city was bombed by Allied planes and liberated on April 26, 1945.
