history
The meaning of the name rottofreno is “broken bridle” and, according to legend, goes back to the fact that the military leader Hannibal in the Punic War of Carthage against Rome did this on his march at this point. This legend is still recorded today in the coat of arms. In fact, it is probably a transcription error, as the place was called Rottofredo in earlier times and is therefore of Lombard origin, so that the name is derived from roth (honor) and fridu (friendship, security).
In August 1746 the battle of Rottofreno (then: Rottofredo ) between France and Austria took place here in the course of the Habsburg War of Succession .
