  • The Autostrada A21 ( Italian for 'Motorway A21'), also called Autostrada dei Vini , is an Italian motorway in the north-west of the country that runs from Turin to Brescia . It is 238 km long and has to be tolled for its entire length . The motorway is in the Italian regions of Piedmont , Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna .

    course

    Course of the A21

The A21 continuously crosses large parts of the wide, fertile Po Valley from west to east and connects the economic centers of Turin, Alessandria, Piacenza and Brescia on its way . It is expanded to four lanes throughout.

The A21 begins in Turin, the capital of the Italian region of Piedmont, where it branches off from the Tangenziale di Torino . To the east it first leads past Villanova d'Asti and Asti . Here the A33 branches off to the south to Cuneo . Going further east, along the Tanaro River , it reaches Alessandria , where it crosses with the A26 that goes to Genoa and Vercelli . East of Alessandria it crosses the Tanaro and crosses with the A7 . Now it changes its course slightly to the northeast and reaches the Lombardy region. Here it runs close to the Oltrepò Pavese wine-growing region, past the towns of Voghera and Broni.

At the town of Castel San Giovanni it reaches Emilia-Romagna and crosses the Po , which also forms the regional border. Then it leads past the city of Piacenza, where there is a connection with the A1 . At Caorso the A21dir branches off, which leads to Fiorenzuola d'Adda. At Cremona the motorway re-enters Lombardy and crosses the Po, the Oglio and the Mella leading northwards . At Brescia it reaches its end point and joins the A4 .

    Surname

    The A21 ends in Brescia

As usual for many Italian motorways, the A21 motorway also has another name: Autostrada dei Vini . This is due to the fact that it passes many wine-growing areas in its course , such as Oltrepò Pavese .

    administration

The motorway between Turin and Piacenza is managed by SATAPSpA (Società Autostrada Torino-Alessandria-Piacenza SpA) . The section between Piacenza and the end of the motorway near Brescia is managed by the Autostrade Centropadane motorway company .

    history

The motorway section between Turin and Piacenza was created on the initiative of the Province of Turin , which founded SATAP in 1960. Construction on this section began in 1963 and lasted 5 years. The first sections were gradually released between 1968 and 1969. The connection with the A1 was opened in 1972, the connection with the A7 Genoa-Milan in 1987. The total cost was around 130 billion lire , which corresponds to around 200 million per kilometer built.

On May 31, 1973, the section between Turin and Piacenza was completely completed and opened to traffic, the section from Piacenza to Brescia followed on November 11, 1971.
