Toll booth
A toll station is a stationary facility for collecting a user fee ( toll ) for motorways , mountain roads and other toll roads .
The toll station consists of one or more gated checkpoints at which the toll is either collected immediately (tunnels, bridges or mountain passes) or an entry card is taken from a machine, which is used to calculate a route-dependent fee at the exit (e.g. on the Italian highways). As a rule, at motorway junctions you have to pay for the route you have traveled so far and buy a new entry card.
Disadvantages of toll collection by means of toll stations compared to electronic recording are the reduced accuracy in the collection of the route actually driven, the slowing down of the flow of traffic at the toll stations and the increased personnel costs. In contrast, the low susceptibility to failure, the harmlessness with regard to data protection and the independence of transponders in the motor vehicles are advantageous.
payment
Payment at toll booths can be made in different ways depending on the country. With all payment types, a barrier prevents the toll station from being passed before the payment has been made.
- Cash payment: The toll is either paid in cash at a cash register or thrown into a funnel as coins.
- Card payment: Payment is made by credit card, EC card or a card from the motorway operator.
- Telepayment: A transponder installed in the vehicle registers the passage through a toll station; the toll is debited from the account.
