The Katschberg tunnel is a 5,898 m long tunnel on the Tauern Autobahn (A 10) and border tunnel between Carinthia and Salzburg .
The Katschberg tunnel connects the Carinthian Katschtal through the Katschberg with the Lungau in Salzburg . It is therefore an important part of the route from Villach to Salzburg . The sections between the Katschberg tunnel and the Tauern tunnel, including the passage through the two tunnels themselves, are a so-called special toll route and currently cost 12.50 euros. Like all other special toll routes in Austria, these sections of the route are exempt from the vignette requirement.
history
The Katschberg tunnel was opened to traffic on December 21, 1974 (on June 21, 1975 the 44-kilometer section from Eben im Pongau to St. Michael im Lungau containing the Tauern tunnel ). Planned from the beginning as a two-tube tunnel, the plans for the second tube were stopped in 1988 for reasons of cost and due to the lower volume of traffic.
It was not until the fire disaster in the Tauern tunnel in 1999 with several deaths that planning for a second tube was resumed.
Expansion and general renovation
In December 2004 the construction of a second tunnel tube began. The actual tunneling started on May 20, 2005, after eleven months the breakthrough with the last blast on April 12, 2006 was possible. On April 4, 2008, the new tunnel tube was opened to traffic. Until April 2009, traffic in this tube flowed in oncoming traffic, and the first tube was renovated. Since April 30, 2009 two tunnels with two lanes each have been available for traffic. After the renovation, the old tube is now 5,565 m long, before the expansion it was 5,413 m long. Full expansion and general renovation cost € 112 million.
