  • Under construction
  • In planning
  • The Autostrada Pedemontana Lombarda is a motorway under construction in northern Italy . The route is intended to help solve the traffic problem in the greater Milan area . It is also intended to create a direct link between the province of Varese and Bergamo .

    The project

The Pedemontana Lombarda got its name because it mostly runs on the edge of the Alps . Pedemontana means at the foot of the mountains .

The Pedemontana should better connect the cities north of Milan and relieve the existing highways in the greater area. It is also part of an extensive transport project, which includes the Pedemontana, the BreBeMi (direct connection from Milan to Brescia) and the Tangenziale Esterna di Milano , Milan's new eastern bypass.

The project with funds from the CIPE is financed, the cost is € 4.115.000.000 EUR for the 87-km long new motorway which 70 new km of motorway to be built.

20 km between Meda and Vimercate will be built with six lanes , i.e. three lanes in each direction, with hard shoulder . The routes from Busto Arsizio to Meda and from Vimercate to the A4 motorway will be built with four lanes and hard shoulders.

The projects in the north of Lombardy:
    The Pedemontana route
    The existing A4
    The existing A8 / A9

The Pedemontana is built according to the current standards in environmental protection. Of the 87 km, around 3/4 of the motorway will run below the landscape height. 12 km are led in "natural tunnels", a further 13 km in tunnels . The remaining 36 km are trenches.

Above all, the Pedemontana is intended to greatly reduce travel time between cities in northern Lombardy. The route from Varese to Como currently takes 60 minutes, in 2015 it should only be 40. The journey time from Como to Monza is to be reduced from the current 75 to 50 minutes. From Bergamo to Malpensa Airport, it should only be 60 minutes instead of 90 minutes.

    Future route

The Pedemontana will have its starting point on the A8 motorway near Malpensa Airport . From there it will run east and meet the A9 . After about 10 km it will run south, using the existing route of the SS35 (Strada Statale 35, State Road 35). Then it will turn east again and pass Monza north . It will be connected to the A51 east of the city and join the A4 motorway near Bergamo .

Also part of the "Pedemontana Project" are the tangents ( ital. Tangenziali ) of Como and Varese , which make up a total of 20 km (Varese: 11 km, Como 9 km).

The construction phases of the Pedemontana are:

    • Section A: 15 km between the A8 Milano-Varese and the A9 ( Switzerland ).
    • Section B1: 7.5 km between the A9 and B2
    • Section B2: 9.5 km between Seveso and Cesano Maderno
    • Section C: 16.5 km between Milano-Meda and the Tangenziale est (eastern bypass, A51 )
    • Section D: 18.5 km from the A51 (Vimercate) to the A4 at Osio Sotto
    • as well as the bypasses of Como and Varese
    The Bergamo-BreBeMi connecting motorway

There are also plans to extend the motorway further south from its planned end on the A4 in order to connect it directly to the BreBeMi (direct connection Brescia- Milan). This planned motorway bears the title "Autostrade Bergamasche" and should be 13 km long. There should be 6 connection points . 8.9 km are to be raised in trenches, 3 km higher and 75 m over a bridge .

    Planned construction time

In 2008 the final project was developed, in 2009 this was fixed. In 2010, construction began on Section A and on the bypasses of Como and Varese. In autumn 2011, construction work began on sections B1, B2, C and D.

Section A and the bypasses are to be opened to traffic in 2014, the entire route in 2015, in time for Expo 2015 in Milan . The motorway is being built by a consortium that also includes the Austrian STRABAG .

    Opening dates

    • Cassano Magnago (A8) - Lomazzo (A9) (route length 15 km): January 26, 2015
    • Lomazzo (A9) - Lentate sul Seveso (SS35) (route length 7.5 km) from 1st July 2015
