Vimercate ( Lombard : Vimercàa ) is a city in Lombardy ( Italy ) with 26,241 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the northern Po Valley. Since 2004 it has belonged to the new province of Monza and Brianza , which was administered by the province of Milan until 2009 .

geography

The place is on the northern edge of the Po Valley, where the Brianza hills begin, 28 km northeast of Milan and 9 km from Monza . It is 35 km to Bergamo in the east and 31 km to Lecco in the north. The river Molgora (Mòlgora) flows through the eastern part of the city from north to south. The Molgora is a tributary of the Muzza, which in turn flows into the Adda . The area of the city is 20.73 km².

history

Vimercate was founded by the Romans on the banks of the Molgora, and its function is already indicated by the name: the old form of the name "Vilmercato" suggests the name "Villa Mercatus" (market town), but also the synonymous "Vicus Mercatus" (market village) is conceivable. The city has many late antique and medieval buildings, including a Roman bridge that is still working (for pedestrians), the oldest in northern Italy.

Significant buildings

Historical monuments

  • Ponte di San Rocco, the Roman bridge over the Molgora.
  • Collegiate Church of Santo Stefano, with the oldest parts from the 7th, mainly from the 13th century.
  • Santuario della Beata Vergine del Rosario (the sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary), used as a parish church because the Collegiata (collegiate church) is only open on exceptional occasions. The Marienkirche, the origin of which goes back to the year 1000, was completely rebuilt from 1628 to 1688, a new campanile was completed in 1700.
  • Palazzo Trotti, a typical "villa di delizia", a summer villa of the Lombard nobility. The palazzo was the residence of the Count Borella in the 16th century, then became the property of the Trotti family and is now the town hall. The facade of the 19th century does not suggest the wealth of baroque frescoes inside. Three halls on the ground floor (Herkulessaal, Cleopatraaal, Semiramissaal) and one hall on the first floor (Minervasaal) were frescoed by an anonymous in the early Settecento , the painting in the Bacchusaal is attributed to Carlo Donelli , called Vimercati (1661–1715). The more important frescoes were created in the second half of the Settecento and are due to the Italian-Swiss baroque painter Giuseppe Antonio Felice Orelli .
  • In the center of Oreno, originally an independent village, now a fraction of Vimercate, many features of the historical cityscape have been preserved: a monastery from the 11th century, the church of San Michele and the villas of the Gallarati Scotti and Borromeo families .

Modern buildings

  • Torri Bianche, two white office towers in the south of the city with 25 floors, 87 meters high. The complex houses a 16-screen cinema, a shopping gallery and many shops.
  • the new bus station (Autostazione) designed by Mario Botta in 1998.
  • Ospedale di Vimercate, the new hospital with 500 beds, built in 2006–2009 based on a design by Mario Botta. It has a bar-like main wing from which four wings with semicircular outlines unfold, conceived as a “flower” with petals. The parts of the building are named after flowers.

schools

  • In the east of the city rises the Centro Scolastico Omnicomprensivo with a high school.
  • The Liceo Antonio Banfi is scientifically oriented .
