Solbiate Olona is a municipality in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality is located on the Olona River and covers an area of ​​4  km² . The Solbiello faction belongs to Solbiate Olona .

The neighboring municipalities of Solbiate Olona are Fagnano Olona , Gorla Maggiore , Gorla Minore and Olgiate Olona .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1017. Emperor Friedrich I. (HRR) Barbarossa crossed the area of ​​Solbiate Olona on May 29, 1176. The troops of the Cardinal von Sitten Matthäus Schiner set the village on fire in 1511 and in 1515 the parish fell victim to a plunder by the mercenaries .

Between 1631 and 1632 there was a plague epidemic here , which was followed by the construction of the Lazzaretto , which was used in 1632 and 1884 to supply after cholera epidemics .

In 1800, following a Napoleonic edict, the city cemetery was built and inaugurated on October 18, 1803. On August 23, 1823, work began in the local cotton factory - today's Cotonificio Ponti .
