Marchirolo is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .
geography
The municipality covers an area of 5.49 km² . The place is at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level. M. The neighboring communities are Cadegliano-Viconago , Cuasso al Monte , Cugliate-Fabiasco , Marzio and Valganna .
history
In Roman times , the area was crossed by the Roman road Via Varesina , which connected Mediolanum ( Milan ) with Luganum ( Lugano ).
During the Second World War , under the German occupation and the Republic of Salò , Fernando Torreggiani, an anti-fascist Catholic, made a decisive contribution to the rescue of the six members of the Melli Rossi Jewish family from Ferrara by evading deportation and allowing them to flee the nearby Switzerland made possible. For this solidarity, the Yad Vashem Institute of Jerusalem awarded Fernando Torreggiani on March 4, 2001 the honorary title of Righteous Among the Nations .
