Leggiuno ( Varesino dialect Leggiün [ledʤùno] ) is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The parish is about 18 kilometers west-northwest of Varese ; the Lago Maggiore separates it from the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola . The municipality of Leggiuno is located on the east bank of Lake Maggiore between Laveno-Mombello in the north and Monvalle in the south. The village of Leggiuno itself is around 2 km from the lake, a little west of Monte Sangiano (532 m above sea level), which is a prominent point in the village. The municipality covers an area of 13.19  km² . Leggiuno comprises a total of 19 fractions (Italian frazioni ): Arolo , Ballarate , Baraggia , Bosco , Casa Motta , Campagna , Cellina , Cobbione , Ghirate , La Gesiola , Marzaro , Mirasole , Quicchio , Reno , Roncaccio , Rozzoni , Santa Caterina del Sasso , Santa Maria and Sasso Moro . The river Rio Balla rate crosses the municipal area from the northeast to its mouth in Lake Maggiore in the fraction Arolo in the south of the municipality. The neighboring municipalities are Belgirate (VB), Besozzo , Caravate , Laveno-Mombello, Monvalle, Sangiano and Stresa (VB).

history

In 1964, archaeologists brought some finds from the Bronze Age to light in the hamlet of Arolo . Among these, in particular, a brooch, a spear, a bracelet, a bronze torque and even the sting of a pole were found, thanks to which it could be assumed that a burial ground was created in the village between 2200 and 2000 BC. For the years of Lombard rule , the only sure sign of that time was a rectangular dolomite grave found on Monte Piaggio in the village of Arolo.

The Santa Caterina del Sasso monastery was built in the early 13th century. In 1554 and 1630 the plague struck the small village of Leggiuno and most of the inhabitants died. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that the municipality became an important center again and until 1927 belonged to the Varese district, then in the province of Como . The Varese district was abolished in 1927 as part of the reorganization of the state structure desired by the fascist regime, and Leggiuno was thus included in the newly founded province of Varese.
