Taino is a municipality ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality is located about 17 kilometers west-southwest of Varese and covers an area of ​​7.7  km² . The Cheglio faction belongs to Taino. The neighboring municipalities are Angera and Sesto Calende .

history

The name of the community is said to be derived from the Celtic ta vyn ("good wine"), or, according to another interpretation, from the gentile name Taginus . In the Middle Ages, Taino was part of the Pieve di Angera and was one of the archbishopric estates in Milan . After a long dispute with the Milanese diocese, it became a fiefdom of the Serbelloni family in the 16th century , who maintained the Taino estates until the beginning of the 20th century.
