Lozza is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region on the southeastern shore of Lake Maggiore .

geography

The municipality is located about four kilometers south-southeast of Varese on the Olona and covers an area of 1.67  km² . The neighboring municipalities are Castiglione Olona , Gazzada Schianno , Malnate , Morazzone , Varese and Vedano Olona .

history

In Roman times, Lozza was crossed by the Roman road Via Varesina , which connected Mediolanum ( Milan ) with Luganum ( Lugano ) and led through the Varisium ( Varese ). Its area has been inhabited since the Neolithic and was conquered by the Lombards and later by the Franks in the early Middle Ages . Around 1200 it became part of the Archdiocese of Milan . In those years it appears in official documents as Locotia and Locia and is annexed to the Varese fiefdom or feud.

In 1648 it was owned by the noble Castiglioni di Lozza family, and in the 17th century Count Marco Fabrizio built a summer residence there (still part of the urban fabric), which was owned by the Castiglioni family until the end of the 19th century.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Lozza also experienced a series of major social and economic transformations, such as the effects of industrialization . Various paper mills and spinning mills arose on its territory, which were also benefited by the construction of the nearby Valmorea Railway.
