Bregano is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality is located about 10.5 kilometers west-northwest of Varese on Acqua Nera , near Lake Varese and covers an area of ​​2.31  km² . The neighboring municipalities are Bardello , Biandronno , Malgesso and Travedona months .

history

The first real traces of human settlement on the Bregano area date from Roman times. The hill of Bregano was already used as a cemetery in Roman times , where rectangular graves were found in several places, facing east to west, about 2 meters long and 70 cm deep, made of rough stones in Serizzo .

In 1280 the Castrum Bregano was destroyed during the Visconti - Torriani Wars , but as evidence of its existence the ruins of a tower, about two and a half meters high with some loopholes, right next to the farmhouse of the mountain, far from these ruins remain 20/30 meters northwest, there would be the base of another tower, now completely dismantled.
