Venegono Superiore is a municipality in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality is located southeast of the city of Varese and covers an area of ​​6  km² . The fractions Pianasca, Pianbosco and San Martino belong to Venegono Superiore. The neighboring municipalities of Venegono Superiore are Binago ( CO ), Castiglione Olona , Vedano Olona and Venegono Inferiore .

The Varese-Venegono airport is located in the municipality .

history

Venegono Superiore belonged to the Contado del Seprio in the Middle Ages and then to the feud of the Duchy of Milan. The historic center is dominated by the castle, which is now inhabited by missionaries from the Institute for African Missions. There were witchcraft trials here in the 17th century . In the castle and in the towns of Monteruzzo, Monterosso and Pianbosco, episodes of witch hunts are documented, in particular that of Elisabetta Oleari and Margherita Fornasari in 1520.
