The Varese-Venegono airport is located in the northern Italian region of Lombardy , just under fifty kilometers northwest of Milan and around ten kilometers southeast of Varese in the area of the municipalities of Venegono Superiore and Venegono Inferiore . The aerodrome is used by the Aeroclub Varese and general aviation . In addition, it is primarily a works airfield for the Leonardo company .
Transport links
The airfield is located between the A8 and A9 motorways on the SP233 road. Venegono Inferiore has a train station, from which the airfield can be easily reached on foot. The province of Varese is also where the Milan Malpensa International Airport is located .
Infrastructure
The airfield has an asphalted, 1420 meter long runway that runs in a north-south direction (18/36). To the west are the Leonardo's production facilities, to the east are the headquarters of the aero club and other smaller facilities. The Aeroclub Varese maintains one of the most renowned flight schools in Italy.
history
Named after the aviation pioneer Arturo Ferrarin , the airfield was created in the 1930s as a simple military airfield. During the Second World War, night fighters , among other things, were stationed here. In 1946 the aircraft manufacturer Aermacchi began to move production from Malpensa to Venegono. Over time, a number of well-known jet trainers such as the Aermacchi MB-326 and the MB-339 completed their maiden flights here . On January 1, 2016, Alenia Aermacchi was completely absorbed by the Leonardo Finmeccanica Group, which also took over the airfield as a production site.
Others
The Varese-Venegono airport should not be confused with the Varese-Calcinate del Pesce airport , located about five kilometers west of Varese on Lake Varese . This small airfield, also designed by Aermacchi, is mainly used by glider pilots .
