The Aermacchi MB-339 is a jet-powered training and light ground attack aircraft from Italy . The machine is based on the reinforced cell of the predecessor Aermacchi MB-326 and features, among other things, a completely new front fuselage. The first flight took place on August 12, 1976. The first machine was handed over to the Italian Air Force on August 8, 1979. The type gained international attention through its use in the Italian aerobatic team Frecce Tricolori . The Frecce Tricolori also flew this model in the Ramstein flight conference accident . Until the 1980s, the Aermacchi MB-339 was the only jet aircraft in the world that could fly maneuvers like the Hammer Head , the Tailslide , the Crazy Flight or the Lomcovák perfectly.
Some specimens were also delivered to Argentina and Peru . The armed version MB-339K first flew on May 30, 1980. This version was shipped to Dubai , Malaysia and Nigeria , among others .
