The Autostrada A9 ( Italian for 'Autobahn A9') is an Italian motorway in the north of the country, which is also part of the Autostrada dei Laghi . It is 32.4 km long and requires a toll .

The A9 branches off the A8 motorway about 20 km north of Milan . Then it leads northwards through the Po plain past the villages of Saronno , Turate and Lurate to Como near Lake Como .

Here it reaches its end point at the Como / Brogeda border crossing . The continuation in Switzerland takes place through the A2 .

history

The A9 is the second oldest motorway in the world and the second oldest Italian motorway (after the A8). It was opened on June 28, 1925 between Lainate and Como. The connection to the Swiss A2 with the border crossing was opened on December 1, 1971.

Administration and development status

The motorway is now managed by the Italian motorway company Autostrade per l'Italia . The kilometers on the A9 do not start at km 0, as is usually the case, but at km 10.7. The first 10 km are part of the A8.

The entire section of the A9 is currently four lanes. Since the motorway is an important link between Milan and Switzerland and Northern Europe , the A9 is currently being expanded to six lanes on almost the entire section. Construction work began on July 27, 2009 and includes the following projects:

• New junction Lomazzo sud ,
• the erection of 13 km of noise barriers and
• six-lane expansion between km 11 and km 34 of the motorway

The total length of the construction section was 23.2 km, the total costs amounted to 563 million euros . The construction work was completed in 2012.

The A9 is subject to a toll, but unlike most motorways, it has a different toll system . The amount of the toll is usually determined by the distance traveled and the road used and the vehicle class. The toll is paid in motorway stations when leaving the motorway.

However, this motorway is managed as an open system (Italian: sistema aperto ), i.e. H. At the two toll booths, regardless of the distance covered, only a lump sum is charged.
