  • The Autostrada A34 is a motorway in northeast Italy that runs from the A4 to the border with Slovenia near Gorizia . It is 17 km long and lies entirely in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia . The A34 is not a completely new motorway, but the former Raccordo autostradale 17 , a motorway feeder whose route has been expanded into a motorway. The adaptation to the motorway results in a powerful connection between Venice and the Slovenian capital Ljubljana without the previous route via Trieste and the Slovenian A3 motorway near Sežana .

    course

The A34 begins at Villesse, near the port city of Monfalcone , where it branches off from the A4. Passing the Villesse toll station, it leads northeast and passes the towns of Villesse and Gradisca d'Isonzo . At the village of Farra d'Isonzo, the motorway crosses the Isonzo river , where the Isonzo battles took place during the First World War . The last junction is at Sant'Andrea, south of the provincial capital Gorizia .

After 17 kilometers the A34 ends at the state border with Slovenia, where the H4 expressway leads via Ajdovščina to Postojna to the A1 and beyond to Ljubljana.

    history

    The former RA17

In the course of the construction of the A4, the provincial capital Gorizia was also connected to the motorway network. Due to the collapse of Yugoslavia and the Iron Curtain , the area around Gorizia moved out of its peripheral location and good transport connections became more and more important.

The expansion of the H4 expressway on the Slovenian side resulted in a new, shorter connection between Venice and Ljubljana without the previous route via Trieste . However, since the Raccordo autostradale 17 (RA 17) was only built like a motorway , there was no powerful connection to the Slovenian H4. At the same time as the six-lane extension of the A4 between Venice and Trieste, which is currently under construction, it was therefore decided to adapt the RA 17 to a more efficient connection. In 2005, the transfer from ANAS to Autovie Venete , which was to manage the future Autostrada A34.

The expansion to the A34 motorway with two lanes plus emergency lanes in each direction began in December 2009. The construction work included the construction of several bridges and the construction of two tunnels, as well as widening the lanes from 14 to 25 meters. The construction costs amount to 183 million euros.

On November 22, 2012, a section near the Slovenian border near Sant'Andrea was opened to traffic on one side. In addition, the construction work on the construction of the new toll station in Villese is progressing. The new building will contain significantly more traces than the previous one.

On March 2, 2013, the new toll station at Villesse was opened. The entire completion of the new motorway and the handover to traffic took place on October 15, 2013. At the same time, the former Raccordo was officially upgraded to the motorway. Overall, the construction of the A34 cost 147 million euros . The entire route was 16.7 km, 851 meters of which were on bridges and 216 in underpasses.
