Autostrada A2 was until 1988 the name of an Italian motorway that runs as part of the Autostrada del Sole from the capital Rome ( Lazio ) to Naples ( Campania ). Today it corresponds to the southern section of the A1 .

The A2 was gradually opened to traffic within the period from 1956 to 1964. With the Bretella Est a direct connection between the A1 (then: Milan- Rome) and the A2 was established in 1988 , after the two motorways were previously only connected via the ring road around Rome .

As the motorway from Milan to Naples could now be used continuously without interruption, a distinction between the A1 and the A2 became superfluous. As a result, the Rome – Naples section, previously known as the A2, became part of the A1. In 2016 the number A2 was assigned to the Salerno - Reggio Calabria motorway , which originally was part of the A3 .
