The Autostrada A18 ( Italian for 'Autobahn A18') is an Italian motorway in Sicily that runs from Messina to Catania . It is currently open to traffic for 118.3 km. The northern section of the route leads from Messina to Catania and is 76.8 km long. The motorway is interrupted between Catania and Siracusa . The southern section of the route is currently passable over a length of 41.5 km. An extension to Gela is planned . The A18 is partly toll road .

The motorway connects to the A19 (Catania - Palermo ) and the A20 (Messina - Palermo).

The individual sections

The A18 can be divided into three sections due to the different planning and construction phases.

Section Messina – Catania

This fully built section of the A18 with a length of 76.8 km is subject to a toll.

Section Catania – Siracusa

This section is currently managed by ANAS and is designed partly as an independent motorway and partly as the SS 114 state road. In contrast to the other two sections, it is free of charge.

Section Siracusa – Gela

The motorway between Siracusa and Rosolini is currently open to traffic over a length of 41.5 km. An extension to Gela is planned . This section is 90.2 km long and is currently partly under construction, the rest in planning. Use is chargeable. The section between the Rosolini and Scicli junctions is currently under construction, the rest between Scicli and Gela is in planning.
