  • The Autostrada A8 ( Italian for 'Autobahn A8') is an Italian motorway in the north of the country, which is also part of the Autostrada dei Laghi . It is 42.6 km long and requires a toll .

    course

The A8 at the junction with the junction to the A26

The A8 begins in the north of Milan , the capital of Lombardy, in Via Certosa. After a few kilometers you will reach the junction with the A4 motorway . From here it leads north through the Po plain to the junction of the second section of the Autostrada dei Laghi , the A9 , which leads to Como and beyond to Switzerland .

The A8 runs near the town of Busto Arsizio to Gallarate , where a motorway branch (ital. Diramazione) connects the A8 with the A26 motorway. Here it turns north and reaches its end point at Varese , near the lake of the same name . The continuation is the SS 233 , which leads to the Swiss border, and the SS 394 , which runs to Lake Maggiore .

    history

    Milan toll booth in 1929

The A8 is considered to be the oldest of the Italian motorways and one of the oldest in the world. The highway was opened on September 21, 1924.

for more details see: Autostrada dei Laghi

    Administration and development status

The motorway is now managed by the Italian motorway company Autostrade per l'Italia .

The northern section of the motorway has four lanes. South of the junction to the A26, it has six, and between the triangle with the A9 and Milan, there are even eight lanes. The construction work was completed in 1999, the total cost was 64.7 million euros .

    toll

The A8 is a toll road, but unlike most motorways, it has a different toll system . The amount of the toll is usually determined by the distance traveled and the road used and the vehicle class. The toll is paid in motorway stations when leaving the motorway.

However, this motorway is managed as an open system (Italian: sistema aperto ), i.e. H. At the two toll stations, regardless of the distance covered, only a lump sum is charged.
