Cairate is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality is located about 14 kilometers south-southeast of Varese at the confluence of the Tenore and Olona rivers . Cairate borders directly on the province of Como . It covers an area of ​​11.31  km² . The Bolladello and Peveranza factions belong to Cairate . The neighboring municipalities are: Carnago , Cassano Magnago , Castelseprio , Fagnano Olona , Locate Varesino (CO), Lonate Ceppino and Tradate .

history

The fortifications were built in Cairate during the rule of the Lombards. Until 1287 the community was under the Contado del Seprio , today's Castelseprio . In 1287, the Dukes of Milan (the Visconti ) took control of the area.

traffic

The former line of the Valmorea Railway from Castellanza to Mendrisio (Ticino, Switzerland) was closed in 1928/1977. Parts of the route have been reopened. But this already ends in Malnate . A reopening until Cairate is not planned.
