Valganna is a municipality in the province of Varese in the Lombardy region .

geography

The municipality covers an area of ​​12  km² . Valganna includes the Boarezzo, Ganna, Ghirla and Mondonico factions. The neighboring municipalities of Valganna are Arcisate , Bedero Valcuvia , Brinzio , Cuasso al Monte , Cugliate-Fabiasco , Cunardo , Induno Olona , Marchirolo and Marzio . The Lago di Ghirla belongs to the municipality .

history

The first settlements in the area date back to Roman times . In the Middle Ages, Ganna was a feud of the Abbey of San Gemolo. In 1556, The Holy See ordered the abolition of the abbey, whose ownership and rights were transferred to the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan , on which the Valganna depended for the centuries that followed.

Ganna lake
  • The Abbey of San Gemolo in the district of Ganna is a former Benedictine monastery that existed from 1095 to 1556. The church was first mentioned in the 12th century. It has frescoes (13th - 14th centuries); the bell tower is Romanesque (1150–1175), the pentagonal monastery was built in the middle of the 14th century. There is a small museum here with paintings and plaster work by Odoardo Tabacchi and Giuseppe Grandi. The church preserves a neoclassical organ. The last restoration took place in 1985.
  • The oratory of San Gemolo was first mentioned in the 13th century and is decorated with frescoes from the school of Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli, known as Morazzone.
  • The Church of Santa Croce was built in 1689 and preserves frescoes by the painter Antonio Busca.
  • The pre-alpine lakes: Lago di Ganna is largely natural, whereas Lago di Ghirla is open to tourists.
  • Ganna Cave.
  • In the Ghirla fraction, in the 18th century, a ram was built that was used over the centuries for iron processing. The building was gradually abandoned at the end of the 19th century and was then restored at the beginning of the 21st century.
