The Luino-Oleggio railway is a predominantly single-track branch line operated by the Italian state railways FS . It is the southern continuation of the cross-border railway line Cadenazzo-Luino and thus part of one of the two cross-border southern approaches to the Gotthard tunnel . The infrastructure is owned by the FS subsidiary RFI , while Trenitalia is responsible for operational management .

history

The line was opened at the same time as the GB line from Luino, on December 4, 1882. The line between Luino and Oleggio, like the northern continuation to Cadenazzo / Bellinzona, was intended as a customer for GB traffic in the direction of Genoa while the route via Chiasso was intended for traffic to Milan .

traffic

passenger traffic

Continuous passenger transport is generally no longer offered today, regional trains run from Trenord between Luino and Gallarate . In addition, the section between Luino and Gallarate is also used by TILO , which offers a two-hour train run from Cadenazzo to Milan-Malpensa airport with the S 30 . A change in Laveno -Mombello is usually necessary. In long-distance traffic, the route is irrelevant, the cross-border trains run either on the Gotthard Railway via Chiasso or the Simplon south access via Domodossola .

Freight transport

The route plays an important role in north-south freight traffic. In addition to trains from SBB Cargo , Hupac and RAIpin , trains from rail companies such as Crossrail , TX Logistik , BLS Cargo or DB Schenker / NordCargo also operate . This was made possible by the opening of the freight transport market on the Gotthard. The freight trains use the route to connect the freight terminals in Novara , Busto Arsizio or Gallarate , the Genoese port and to bypass the Milan metropolitan area.
