The Domodossola – Milan railway is a main railway line in Italy that is electrified with 3000 volts direct current and has been expanded to consist of two tracks . It represents the connection between the Simplon Railway and Milan . The infrastructure is owned by the Ferrovie-dello-Stato subsidiary RFI , the passenger transport operations are the responsibility of the sister company Trenitalia .

history

In 1858 the southernmost section from Milan to Rho was opened to traffic as part of the Turin-Milan railway . The extension to Gallarate followed in 1860 , before the rails reached Sesto Calende five years later . In 1868 the section to Arona was opened.

In 1865, the Società per le Strade Ferrate dell'Alta Italia took over ownership of the route, which in 1885 passed to the Società per le Strade Ferrate del Mediterraneo .

In 1901 the section from Milan to Gallarate was electrified with a power rail as part of the " Ferrovie Varesine ".

At the beginning of 1905 the section from Arona to Domodossola was opened as part of the Simplon line . After a few months, the line went to the FS as part of the railroad nationalization .

In 1906, with the completion of the Simplon Tunnel, the cross-border connection to Brig was completed; the double-lane expansion was completed in the 1960s.

At Domodossola station, the line connects seamlessly to the Simplon Railway from Vallorbe - Lausanne, which runs through the Simplon Tunnel . It then divides into two lines - a regional line with stops to Novara and a long-distance line to Milan - which run parallel between the Vogogna Ossola and Cuzzago stations; However, track connections only exist in Premosello station . In Cuzzago the line branches off to the right to Novara. After the Verbania-Pallanza train station, which is far from the eponymous city, the route leads via Stresa to just before Arona along Lake Maggiore . In Sesto Calende it crosses the Luino – Novara railway line , which, with its northern continuation, also represents a cross-border connection between Switzerland and Italy. At Sesto Calende, the Ticino is crossed together with the main road that runs parallel to the railway on a two-level steel bridge built in 1882. The line from Varese and Porto Ceresio joins the line in Gallarate . Immediately after Busto Arsizio , the link branches off to the city's FNM train station, which continues to Milan-Malpensa airport . The southern Simplon approach joins the main line from Turin in front of the Rho train station . Then the four-lane rail line is separated by means of a flyover in order to cross under the Milan motorway ring. The line separates after the Milano Certosa station. A branch leads to the Milano Porta Garibaldi train station with a continuation to the Milanese bypass line and the subterranean cross-city line Passante - it is mainly used by regional and S-Bahn traffic. The branch reserved for long-distance traffic leads to Milano Centrale railway station .

business

passenger traffic

In long-distance traffic, ETR 610 sets operate as EuroCity on the routes ( Venezia Santa Lucia -) Milano Centrale - Geneva-Cornavin and Milano Centrale - Basel SBB . These trains stop at Domodossola and alternate between Stresa and Gallarate .

In regional transport, in addition to regional Trenitalia trains , various lines of the Milan S-Bahn run along the route, the S5 runs to Gallarate, and then branches off to Varese. The S6, however, branches off to Rho in the direction of Turin.

Freight transport

In addition to Trenitalia , companies such as SBB Cargo , BLS Cargo , DB Schenker Rail / NordCargo , Hupac , RAlpin , TX Logistik or Crossrail also use the railway line. On the one hand the Simplon-Lötschberg axis is an important freight connection through Switzerland, on the other hand the railway line to Luino – Cadenazzo – Bellinzona can be reached with two branches in Gallarate and Sesto Calende, which in turn is an important southern access of the Gotthard Railway . In Gallarate and Busto Arsizio there are freight terminals partly operated by Swiss companies.
