Ferrovie Varesine

As Ferrovie Varesine (" Varese -Bahn"), or also as the Milan – Varese – Porto Ceresio railway line, a series of railway lines in the northern Italian region of Lombardy , which was operated from 1901–1902 by the Società per le Strade Ferrate del Mediterraneo , operator of Rete Mediterranea , were equipped with busbars for operation with direct current of 650 volts .

The route comprised several sections with a total length of 72.6 kilometers:

For the operation of the "Varesine", a wing station , the so-called "stazione delle Varesine" , was built at what was then the Milano Centrale railway station .

On July 1, 1905, the operation between Milan and Varese was taken over by the Ferrovie dello Stato , the remaining route to Porto Ceresio remained the Società per le Strade Ferrate del Mediterraneo until 1918.

Numerous local trains, used by commuters and tourists, ran along the route, as did the international express trains of the Simplon Railway between Milan and Gallarate .

From 1947 to 1949 the line was equipped with the overhead contact line system of the FS for operation with 3000 volts direct current, the conductor rail was dismantled from 1951.
