Rho [rɔ] is a city with 51,323 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Milan , Lombardy region in Italy .
geography
The place is 156 m above sea level on the bank of the Olona River . It extends over an area of 22 km² and its population density is 2326 inhabitants / km².
history
The first written mention of the city comes from the year 846, still under the name Vico Raudo . In old documents there are other names such as Rhode , Rodo , Raude , Raudo , Rhaudum , Rò and Rhò .
In 1004 Enrico II set up a court, the town was granted market rights and the first canals were built to irrigate the fields. The city takes an active part in shaping the public life of the State of Milan . In May 1160 the place was destroyed by Barbarossa's troops in an attack on Milan, but rebuilt in a relatively short time.
Around 1300 the first hospital opened by Augustinian monks . Around 1500 an Augustinian monastery was built, which was later destroyed by Napoleon's troops .
Economy and Transport
The city is an important railway junction, where the Milan - Novara and Milan - Varese lines meet . The place is also a center of the chemical and textile industries.
The extensions to the Fieramilano exhibition center in Milan, completed in 2005, are located in the area of Rho and the neighboring municipality of Pero . At the train station Rho Fiera a branch of the ends of the line M1 Milan Metro .
