NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy
The NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy (NRDC-ITA) (also Rapid Deployable Italian Corps ) was established in November 2001 as NATO's High Readiness Force ( HRF ) . The NRDC-ITA staff is located in Solbiate Olona , a few kilometers northwest of Milan .
structure
The operational corps is managed by the higher-level Allied Joint Force Commands in Naples or Brunssum . Soldiers from a number of NATO countries serve on the staff, with Italy providing the commanding general and most of the staff . Normally, the corps is subordinate to only one support regiment and the 1st telecommunications regiment of the Italian Army , if necessary it can lead several divisions or brigades in addition to other support troops .
history
The NRDC-ITA is the successor to the III. Corps of the Italian Army, which was (re) established in Milan in the 1950s . During the Cold War , it formed the reserve of the Italian field army in northern Italy with its subordinate units. Together with the IV Corps in Bolzano and the V Corps in Vittorio Veneto , it was assigned to the Landsouth NATO command in Verona . Associations of the III. Corps were already called in for foreign missions at this time, for example in the peace mission in Lebanon (1982–84). Between 1991 and 1998 almost all units subordinate to the corps were disbanded. In 1998 the corps staff changed its name to Comando Forze di Proiezione , to which four brigades throughout Italy were subordinate, which up to this point had already consisted of volunteers and professional soldiers. In 2001, on the basis of a NATO decision, the new NRDC-ITA emerged from this command, to which the then necessary units are subordinate only to NATO operations.
Under Lieutenant General Mauro Del Vecchio , the staff of the NRDC-ITA led the international protection force ISAF in Afghanistan from August 2005 to May 2006 . Later on, the corps provided management personnel there.
coat of arms
The Italian national colors can be seen on the coat of arms of the corps staff, the colors of the city of Milan (red and white) on the inner shield . The eagle head and the saying ubique celere (“everywhere fast”) refer not only to the tasks of the corps, but also to a former fast division ( 3a divisione celere ), whose traditions are also officially continued.
Commanding generals
Commanding generals of the NRDC-ITA hold the rank of lieutenant general ( Generale di Corpo d'Armata ) .
