Mauro Del Vecchio

Mauro Del Vecchio (born June 7, 1946 in Rome ) is a retired Italian politician and lieutenant general .

Career

Del Vecchio was trained at the Military Academy in Modena and Turin from 1965 to 1969 and then served as an officer with the Bersaglieri . From March 1997 to November 1999 he commanded the Bersaglieri "Garibaldi" brigade , with which he also took part in peace operations in the former Yugoslavia . On February 20, 2004, he took command of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy in Solbiate Olona near Milan .

Under his leadership, this new NATO Reaction Corps staff achieved the level of training required for missions abroad. From August 2005 to May 2006, Del Vecchio and his staff led the international protection force ISAF in Afghanistan . Del Vecchio commanded the Italian operational command in Rome-Centocelle from September 2007 to March 2008 . The Prodi government considered him for the post of Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces in late 2007. In March 2008, Del Vecchio retired as a highly decorated lieutenant general from active duty after the offer of the Chairman of the Democratic Party , Walter Veltroni had assumed in the Italian general election, 2008 to run for the left-liberal Democrats.

Mauro Del Vecchio was a member of the Italian Senate from 2008 to 2013 .
