The World Exhibition Expo 2015 under the theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life (dt. Feeding the planet, energy for life ) was held from May 1 to October 31, 2015 in the Italian Milan instead. The "Expo" is one of the major international exhibitions recognized by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE). The exhibition pavilion of Germany under the motto Be active (dt. Be active ).

As early as 1906, Milan hosted the world exhibition , there with the theme of traffic .

history

Albero della Vita at the Italian pavilion

In October 2003, the Italian government decided to apply with Milan for Expo 2015. The area of the New Milan Trade Fair , which opened in 2005, was planned as the exhibition venue . The final decision for Milan did not take place until March 31, 2008 - at the conference of the Bureau International des Expositions in Paris, the city was able to prevail among the delegates with 86 to 65 votes against its competitor Izmir . The contract for Milan was celebrated in the city with a "Victory Parade". On July 31, 2013, the exhibition company announced a media partnership with the state broadcaster RAI , which will report on the Milan World Exhibition under the name RAI Expo .

When it opened on May 1, 2015, there were serious riots in downtown Milan. There were injuries and property damage, and individual fires were extinguished with water cannons. Several people were arrested.

Organized Crime and Corruption

The Organized Crime overshadowed even this World Expo. In order to avoid any suspicion of corruption or Mafia infiltration, the exhibition company concluded a legality agreement with the construction companies involved, and certificates were issued “mafia-free”. All construction companies involved were confirmed as certified mafia-free. The construction sites were checked. With the result that in 7,200 controls there was not a single irregularity, let alone a display.

On May 8, 2014, a year before the opening of the World Expo 2015, a corruption ring was unearthed, which included an ex-Berlusconi senator and a former socialist - a total of seven managers and politicians were arrested for corruption in connection with Expo 2015. They controlled the tenders for the expo and received large bribes. The arrested were accused of forming a mafia-like "cùpola" for personal exploitation and manipulation of the multi-billion dollar contract award. The Expo 2015 manager directly responsible for the award of the contract and the former head of the Lombardy region company responsible for infrastructure projects were arrested . The latter director had already been put in custody together with seven accomplices for corrupt machinations in March.

Fearing that the construction work would not be completed on time, the serious backlog of construction work had already caused negative headlines, the government of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi felt compelled to "simplify" the control procedures against the mafia .

theme

The theme chosen for Expo 2015 was Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life ( Nutrire il pianeta, energia per la vita ). It was supposed to combine technology , innovation , culture , tradition and creativity with the topics of nutrition and food and thus tied in with topics that had already played a role in earlier world exhibitions (e.g. at the Expo 2008 in Saragossa with the topic of water and sustainable development ). In the face of new global scenarios and current problems, the focus has been on the right of all people to healthy and adequate nutrition. Unlike previous World Expos no time should showcase organized, but a discussion forum on offer.

Infrastructure

Piazza Castello
EXPO2015 site plan

The area that houses the exhibition halls of Expo 2015 extends northwest of Milan in the municipalities of Rho and Pero . It occupies an area of 1.1 km². In addition to the new Fiera di Milano exhibition center , designed by the architect Massimiliano Fuksas , the entire area is being redesigned. For a long time, the area was dominated by industrial facilities and was then used for agriculture as well as for logistic and communal services. The two areas will be connected by a pedestrian bridge that will be next to the future high-speed train station in Rho-Pero ( Rho Fiera station ). The originally planned bike paths were never built, so it was not practical to travel by bike. Several motorways have been built or expanded to allow access to the exhibition grounds.

The world exhibition with its extensive but temporary overall infrastructure was supported by various national and international companies as part of a sponsorship .

Pavilions

United Nations Pavilion Zero

The individual pavilions had an area between 500 and 4500 . It was planned that 56% of the area should be greened. The expo management expected 20 million visitors, with about 75% of the visitors coming from Italy.

Germany

The German pavilion

The participation contract for EXPO 2015 was signed on September 25, 2012. The exhibition area of the German pavilion was around 4900 m², the investment total was 40 million euros. In June 2013 the winning design was presented by the ARGE German Pavilion EXPO 2015 Milan (Schmidhuber, Milla & Partner, Nüssli Germany ). Messe Frankfurt was selected by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy to organize the German Pavilion .

Fields of Ideas , the German pavilion, was based on the theme of EXPO 2015 (“Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”). Germany presented itself as a lively, fertile “landscape” full of ideas for the nutrition of the future. Under the motto “Be active!” , The pavilion made it possible to experience how important a respectful approach to nature is for food security and invited visitors to become active themselves.

Architecture and exhibition were closely interlinked. The pavilion, in the form of a gently rising landscape level, was reminiscent of a piece of German field and meadows. The central design element were stylized plants that grew as "idea seedlings" from the exhibition to the surface, where they unfolded a canopy of leaves.

Visitors were able to discover the “Fields of Ideas” in two ways: On the first way, they strolled across the freely accessible landscape level. The second path led through the themed exhibition inside the pavilion - from the sources of nutrition to food production and consumption in the urban world.

In order to immerse themselves in the world of the six subject areas of water, soil, climate, biodiversity, food and my garden of ideas, each visitor received a SeedBoard. It was a 20 by 10 centimeter, fold-out piece of corrugated cardboard. The inner surface served as a projection surface for all content that could be virtually experienced in the pavilion - texts, images, films or games. Exhibition content could be started and controlled with the SeedBoard.

"Regardless of all the topics that the German Pavilion has in store for discovery, the facade of the pavilion is the one that holds everything together, that transports the characteristic image of Germany to the outside." Wood, fiber cement and textile membranes with organic photovoltaics were the defining materials of the German Pavilion . For the façades, which looked like broken layers of earth, the architects selected a traditional product in its latest version: solid-colored fiber cement panels in two new earthen colors.

With around three million visitors, the German Pavilion “Fields of Ideas” drew a positive balance at the end of Expo Milano 2015. In addition to the Reddot Award for the best communication in space, the US American Exhibitor Magazine recognized him as the best pavilion and for the best interactivity (for the SeedBoard). The German Pavilion also won the FAMAB Awards in three categories: Gold for the “Best Public Event”, Gold for the “Best Interactive Installation” and Bronze for the “Best Thematic Exhibition”. The award for the “Best Interactive Installation” went to the German Pavilion team with the highest jury rating for the “SeedBoard”.

After Aichi, Saragossa, Yeosu and Shanghai, an international jury has awarded the German Expo presentation in Milan with the BIE Award again. With the BIE Awards she honored those participants who u. a. best implemented the motto “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” in Milan. The prizes are awarded by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) based in Paris, which is responsible for awarding world exhibitions.

Austria

The Austrian pavilion

On April 17th, 2012 Austria decided to take part in Expo 2015. The exhibition area of the Austrian pavilion is expected to be around 2000 m². On January 13, 2014, the Austria pavilion for the 2015 World Exhibition, which has the motto: "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life", was presented in the 21er Haus, the museum for contemporary art. 450 interested parties requested the tender documents, 56 creative teams submitted designs as part of an EU-wide design competition. An expert jury then determined the most suitable design in terms of idea, room concept, feasibility and sustainability. The winner of the competition was the interdisciplinary team.breathe.austria, which includes representatives from Graz University of Technology and BOKU Vienna. Their energy self-sufficient concept breathe.austria puts “food number one” in the center with the air. The exhibition area of 560 square meters was densely planted with native trees, the entire vegetation from perennials to large trees runs through a regular season cycle during the EXPO. “We use the high identification potential of the unique air and quality of life in Austria and address the natural and technical competence of our country. According to the motto 'Energy for Life', we are creating a pavilion to breathe deeply - with the feeling of a dense forest from Austria. One breath in our Austrian forest stays in your lungs for two years, ”emphasizes Klaus. K. Loenhart, representative of team.breathe.austria.

As part of the Towards a Sustainable EXPO program of the Italian Ministry of the Environment, Austria received an award for the pavilion for its sustainable architectural concept.

Switzerland

The Swiss pavilion

The Swiss Federal Council has decided on 12 May 2010 for Switzerland's participation in the Expo, 2015. On January 5, 2011, Switzerland confirmed its participation in Expo 2015 to the host country Italy . One month later, on February 3, 2011, Switzerland's participation was celebrated with an official occasion in the Centro Svizzero in Milan in the presence of Mayor Letizia Moratti . The relevant contract was signed on October 27, 2011.

Switzerland was represented with the Confooderatio Helvetica project , a play on words derived from the Latin name of the Swiss Confederation, Confoederatio Helvetica (CH), and the English word for food. The Swiss pavilion covered an area of 4432  and is in the immediate vicinity of the Italian pavilion.

Presence Switzerland was responsible for the implementation of the winning project of netwerch GmbH from Brugg , which emerged from an anonymous two-stage competition on January 20, 2012 from 103 submitted ideas, while Nüssli (Schweiz) AG carried out the structural implementation . The project looks u. a. the construction of up to 12 meter high wooden towers that will be filled with Swiss specialties, where visitors can then help themselves. The food consumed from the wooden towers should not be refilled. This is to show visitors that food supplies are not inexhaustible.

"The topic is particularly interesting because it opens up the discussion about various major challenges for the future of our planet."

- Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter : Green light for Swiss presence at Expo 2015 . Swissinfo , September 19, 2012

The main sponsor of the Swiss pavilion was the food company Nestlé , while the city presence of Basel is sponsored by the seed and pesticide manufacturer Syngenta . The type of presentation was criticized by several Swiss non-governmental organizations .

Attendees

The following countries and organizations took part as exhibitors at the world exhibition:

There was an official app for the Android and iOS operating systems for the Expo . For example, it contained a GPS-based map of the exhibition grounds. However, the map was only displayed when data roaming was switched on, or when using the Expo WLAN , which was available to all visitors free of charge in the outdoor areas almost everywhere.
