The world exhibition Expo 2017 took place from June 10th to September 10th 2017 in the Kazakh capital Astana . It is recognized by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the joint international committee for the design and tendering of world exhibitions.
It is the first time that a world exhibition has taken place in Kazakhstan or Central Asia .
Bidding process
Kazakhstan announced its readiness to host Expo 2017 in Astana at the 147th BIE General Assembly on July 1, 2010 in Paris . Other countries interested in hosting had six months to also declare their candidacy. Only Liège ( Belgium ) took advantage of this opportunity . The decision in favor of Astana was made by the BIE on November 22, 2012 in Paris.
theme
As the theme for the Expo 2017 was Future Energy: Action for Global Sustainability ( : measures for global sustainable energy future selected). Sufficient and secure energy supplies in developing countries should be addressed as well as the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energies . The subject of “energy of the future” is the “greatest challenge facing humanity today”.
Visitors
The organizing committee in Astana expected 5 million visitors to the Expo 2017. The planning promised the visitors an impressive fiction of the future way of life of the people on earth, which is presented in 5 subject areas. The entire Expo site was designed with sustainability in mind.
The exhibition in Astana was visited by 3,977,545 people.
Infrastructure
The area planned for Expo 2017 is located in the south-eastern part of the government district of Astana, which has been newly created since 1998, and has a size of 113 hectares. It is conveniently located on the inner ring road.
