The world exhibition Expo 2012 took place from May 12th to August 12th 2012 in the coastal city of Yeosu ( South Korea ) under the motto "Living Ocean, Living Coast". A total of 105 nations and 9 international organizations took part in the event.
Surcharge
The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris awarded Yeosu the contract for the Expo 2012 on November 26, 2007. Yeosu successfully prevailed against its competitors Tangier and Wroclaw .
Mascot and logo
Yeony ( 여니 ) and Suny ( 수니 ) were the official mascots of Expo 2012. The names are derived from Yeosu . 여 Yeo means beautiful and pretty , 수 Su means water .
The entire logo expresses the harmony between mother earth, humans and the sea: Yeony and Suny personify a drop of water and plankton , a main food source of the sea and important absorber of carbon dioxide .
The dark blue of Yeonys symbolizes the water of the ocean while the light, red color of Sunys stands for living beings and the earth. The color white stands for the environment in which living things live.
The tentacles should clarify the connection to the visitors. The logo is intended to represent ecology, oceans and the environment in a simplified manner.
The theme song for Expo 2012 was called 바다 가 기억 하는 얘기 Bada-ga Gieokhaneun Yaegi ( Stories the Sea Tells ) and was recorded by the South Korean pop singer and actress IU 아이유 .
