Vox Maris is an organ which , according to the Guinness Book of Records , is currently (2015) the loudest musical instrument ever built with a measured volume of a maximum of 138.4 dB . It replaces the organ of the Atlantic City Convention Hall, which was previously the loudest organ in the world . It was developed and built by the German organ building company Hey Orgelbau for the World Expo 2012 in Yeosu ( Korea ). The Vox Maris is an open-air organ and winds as a sound sculpture around the two 72-meter-high towers of the Sky Tower and was known as the acoustic symbol of the world exhibition. The pipes of the Vox Maris represent a new development, which is based on the model of the steam pipes used as signal transmitters on ships . This explains the name Vox Maris ("voice of the sea"). With their 360 ° circumferential labia, the pipes reach controllable volume levels between 85 and 138.4 dB without any significant change in pitch. This made it possible to use the Vox Maris during the expo for quiet concerts with other instruments as well as to play them at full volume for the opening and closing of each expo day. As a novelty in organ building , the volume of the organ can be controlled by simply pressing the keys. You can let the organ (similar to a piano ) sound dynamically sensitive in forte and piano . With its sound reminiscent of ship signals, the Vox Maris reflected the expo motto “The living ocean and coast”.
