Hubertus Zomack

Hubertus Zomack (born September 30, 1941 in Wittichenau ; † February 22, 2019 in Görlitz ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman, vicar general and provost in the diocese of Görlitz .

Life

Hubertus Zomack grew up in the small town of Wittichenau in Upper Lusatia, where he learned the trade of brewer after finishing school . Under the impression of the real existing socialism in the GDR , he decided to study theology. After studying Catholic theology in Erfurt , he was ordained a priest on June 27, 1970 by Bishop Gerhard Schaffran in Görlitz . After a short time, Zomack was a chaplain in Cottbus in St. Maria, Mater Dolorosa, in Finsterwalde and St. Peter and Paul in Senftenberg . From 1976 to 1993 Zomack was the parish curate of the Holy Family parish in Lübbenau . At the time of the fall of the Wall , he headed the round table here .

From 1979 to 1986, in addition to his position as pastor of Lübbenau, he was also the parish administrator of the parish of St. Maria Regina Rosarii in Golßen . From 1979 to 1981 Zomack was also a marriage bond defender and from 1981 to 1989 a judge at the interdiocesan office in Bautzen and Dresden . From 1989 to 1995 he was also vice-official at the interdiocesan office in Berlin . From 1993 to 1995 served as Zomack Ordinariatsrat active in the Episcopal administration of the diocese before 1 January 1996 as the successor of Peter Canisius Birkner of Bishop Rudolf Müller was appointed vicar general. On March 2, 1996, Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness . Since 1997 he has been the diocese's economist and since 1999 chairman of the Caritas Association of the Diocese of Görlitz . He also served since 1998 canon of the Cathedral Chapter of St. James. During the period of the Sedis vacancy in 2006/2007 he administered the diocese of Görlitz as diocesan administrator .

On June 24, 2010 he was appointed provost of the Görlitz cathedral chapter with effect from September 8 of the same year .

On July 9, 2010, he was appointed permanent representative of Bishop Konrad Zdarsa until the day that Bishop Zdarsa of the Diocese of Augsburg took possession. After Bishop Konrad Zdarsa took office in Augsburg, the Görlitz Cathedral Chapter elected him again as diocesan administrator on October 25, 2010. He held this office until the inauguration of Zdarsa's successor, Wolfgang Ipolt , on August 28, 2011. Ipolt called him again on the same day as vicar general of the diocese of Görlitz. On September 1, 2012, Alfred Hoffmann succeeded him as Vicar General in Görlitz.

Hubertus Zomack was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land and was a member of the German Association of the Holy Land . In 1998, Cardinal Grand Master Carlo Furno made him Knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and invested in Mainz Cathedral on May 9, 1998 by Anton Schlembach , Grand Prior of the Papal Order in Germany. In 2016 he was appointed Officer of the Order. From 1999 to 2016 Zomack was a member of the general board of the Bonifatiuswerk .

On October 1, 2016, Bishop Ipolt accepted his renunciation of the office of provost, which had been submitted at the age of 75.

On February 22, 2019, he succumbed to the consequences of his cancer in Görlitz and was buried on March 1, 2019 in the crypt next to the St. Jakobus Cathedral (Görlitz) .
