With the success of her 2011 albums, Real + and Last Fantasy , she cemented her image and established herself as one of the most popular singers in the South Korean music industry. For their third studio album, Modern Times (2013), she pursued a more mature style, while by their following works, A Flower Bookmark (2014) and chat Shire (2015), a development different from the mainstream - K-Pop can be observed. Chat-Shire is also IU's first album in which she appears as the sole songwriter and producer .

IU released four studio albums and nine EPs and is one of the most successful singers in South Korea. Since 2012 she has always been listed in Forbes magazine's Korea Power Celebrity 40 . She has the most number-one hits on Billboard magazine's Korea K-Pop Hot 100 and also holds the record at the top of the charts for most weeks. Life

IU was born on May 16, 1993 in Seoul . She grew up in the cities of Uijeongbu and Hanam in Gyeonggi Province and in Gwangjin-gu in Seoul. For a long time she lived with her grandmother and her brother separated from their parents. While attending middle school , IU found her passion for music and, after performing at her school, sought a career as a singer. She auditioned for about 20 entertainment agencies and was also betrayed by fake companies. In 2007 she was finally successful and signed with LOEN Entertainment and then moved to Bangbae-dong (Seoul). IU assumed she would be a three to four year trainee there and eventually become a member of a girl group . Instead, the management decided to make IU's debut in 2008 after just ten months. The stage name IU was defined by management, which means "I and You become one through music" (I and you become one through music) . Her burgeoning career resulted in a decline in attendance at school and lower grades. She graduated from Dongdeok Girls' High School in Seoul on February 9, 2012 and has since focused entirely on her career.

IU was in a relationship with the eleven years older, South Korean rock musician Chang Kiha from 2013 to 2017 . Both met in late 2013 when IU was a guest on a radio show hosted by Chang. The relationship was made public in October 2015.

Career

2008–2009: Debut and Growing Up

IU had her first appearance on September 18, 2008 with her song Mia ( 미아 ) in the television program M! Countdown . It was the main single of their debut EP Lost and Found, which was released shortly thereafter . However, this was not successful. Nevertheless, IU was named “Young Artist of the Month” by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism. In a 2011 interview , she revealed that she was grateful for the lack of success at the beginning of her career. Otherwise she would not appreciate her management and other participants and would not appreciate her later popularity to the same extent.

On April 23, 2009 her first studio album Growing Up was released with the main title song Boo . With this she was more successful than with Lost and Found . The title song Boo was very different from the "dark" ballad Mia . A cute image was pursued with the new song. At the end of 2009 IU's second mini-album, iu… im . From November 13, 2009, she appeared in the music programs of the three major television stations in South Korea ( KBS , SBS , MBC ) with her theme song Marshmallow ( 마쉬멜로 우 ). In 2013, IU revealed on Happy Together that she didn't like dressing as girlishly as she did for the song's appearances. The song was well received by the public and followed Boo's image .

In addition to her album releases, IU first appeared on soundtracks for television dramas in 2009 : Strike Love ( 2009 외인 구단 ) and Queen Seondeok ( 선덕여 왕 ) by MBC . She also worked with Mighty Mouth and The Three Views on their albums. As its popularity grew, IU appeared as a guest on TV shows such as Star Golden Bell , Kim Jung-eun's Chocolate, and You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook . She also became a presenter for GOM TV's weekly chart show and was a regular guest on the radio shows Kiss the Radio , Volume Up , Starry Night and Chinhan Chingu ( 친한 친구 ).

IU at the 2010 Melon Music Awards

On June 3, 2010 the song Jansori ( 잔소리 ) was released, a duet with Seulong from 2AM . The song topped the South Korean charts for three weeks. The song was written by Kim Eana and Lee Min-soo. It was used as one of the songs on the second season of the TV show We Got Married . Shortly afterwards, IU released the song Yeoja-raseo ( 여자 라서 ) from the soundtrack of the historical drama Road No. 1 ( 로드 넘버원 ). IU's third EP, Real , was released on December 9, 2010. The song Good Day was written by the songwriter Kim Eana and the composer Lee Min-soo. They have already worked with both of them for Jansori . They are an integral part of IU's success. According to Kim Eana, Good Day is about a shy girl who gets nervous when she wants to confess her feelings to the boy she likes. IU won numerous awards in the music programs M! Countdown , Music Bank and Inkigayo . Both Kim and Lee attest the word 오빠 Oppa , which IU sings in the song, to be a success factor.

From July 2010 to May 2011 IU was part of the cast of the variety show Heroes . Shortly thereafter, she made her acting debut in the TV drama Dream High . The series was filmed from December 2010 to February 2011. IU played Kim Pil-suk, a shy, overweight girl who dreams of becoming a singer. In June, IU started as the presenter of the Inkigayo music program . She held this position until July 2013. Between May and July 2011, IU took part in the reality figure skating competition Kim Yuna's Kiss & Cry until she was eliminated in the eighth episode. At that time, she also participated in the program Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend , but canceled after one episode due to her stress from many TV appearances and her schedule. Of her activities as a singer, entertainer and actress, IU described appearances in variety shows as the most stressful.

IU's second album, Last Fantasy , was released in two versions on November 29, 2011; a regular edition and a special edition with only 15,000 units. The Korea JoongAng Daily described the album as one that " caters to all musical tastes and fans," while Billboard's Jeff Benjamin highlighted the "cinematic feel" with the first song, Bimil ( 비밀 ). For the album, IU worked with singer-songwriters such as Yoon Sang, Lee Juck and Ra.D. In total, the songs on the album were downloaded more than ten million times within the first two weeks. Eight of the 13 songs entered the top 10 of the South Korean Gaon Charts and the album reached number one on the album charts. The main title You and I ( 너랑 나 ) became IU's most successful song with 5.5 million downloads by the end of 2012.

IU performing at Korea Cancer Center Hospital (2013)

IU played her first leading role in 2013 in the television series Choegoda I Sun-sin ( 최고 다 이순신 ) by KBS2 . She played Lee Sun-sin , an average but daring girl, for over 50 episodes from March 9 to August 25, 2013. As the series progressed, IU received positive reviews and ratings of up to 30.8%.

During the same period, IU released their second EP in Japan entitled Can You Hear Me? . IU's first original Japanese songs are on the EP . The singles Beautiful Dancer and New World reached number 66 and 76 respectively on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and thus significantly worse than the versions of Good Day and You and I translated into Japanese . Rolling Stone Japan gave the album a mediocre review, but highlighted the songs Beautiful Dancer and Truth as very well done. Both songs were written by the R&B producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis . On September 11, 2013, IU's next Japanese single, Monday Afternoon , was released, which debuted at number 9 on the daily Oricon charts .

Almost two years after Last Fantasy , IU released her third studio album, Modern Times , on October 8, 2013. It is considered a big step by the singer with more mature music than her previous songs. IU wrote two of the 13 songs on the album. The complexity of the jazz styles and the collaboration with talented artists was explicitly mentioned in the Billboard , the Korea Herald and on Seoulbeats . According to Jessica Oak from Billboard magazine, the album creates a nostalgic atmosphere with modern influences, something like Christina Aguilera's Back to Basics (2006). IU convinces with her musical sensitivity beyond a typical 20 year old. The Korea Herald wrote that the old-fashioned sounds and modern effects were artistically put together to form a fresh but familiar series of songs. Modern Times has a peculiar, carefree feeling that is reminiscent of the Roaring Twenties . Modern Times debuted at number one on the South Korean album charts, while seven songs made it into the top 10 on the digital charts . In the wake of the release, IU performed their second tour.

At the end of the year, IU played the leading female role in the romantic-comedic television series Bel Ami ( 예쁜 남자 Nappeun Namja ). In addition, a new edition of IU's previously released album was released on December 20, 2013 under the title Modern Times - Epilogue with two more songs: Friday ( 금요일 에 만나요 ) and Pastel Crayon ( 크레파스 ). Friday was written by IU itself and made it into the top 10 of the 2014 year-end charts, although the song was not actively promoted in music programs.

On May 16, 2014 IU released their first cover - EP A Flower Bookmark ( 꽃 갈피 Kkotgalpi ). It contains seven cover versions of songs whose originals were released in the 1980s and 1990s , from ballads to dance, folk and rock . The album was created in response to requests from fans and positive feedback on previous cover songs . Three of the songs went straight into the top 10 of the South Korean Gaon Charts , with the main title My Old Story ( 나의 옛날 이야기 ) reaching number 2 on the charts. The EP was received positively. Korea Herald 's son Ji-young praised IU's new interpretations ; IU keep the balance between keeping the original and still giving the songs their own touch. Jeff Benjamin from Billboard emphasized the song Pierrot Smiles at Us ( 삐에로 는 우릴 보고 웃지 ), as this IUs shows diversity as a singer. Ultimately, A Flower Bookmark was nominated for the Melon Music Award for Album of the Year and landed 3rd on Billboard's 2014 list of Best K-Pop Albums.

IU's third concert series, Just One Step… That Much More , was planned to be more confidential and smaller. The tour took place on eight nights between May 22nd and June 1st, 2014. The tickets for the tour were sold out after ten minutes. Guests for IU's tour were Kim Jong-hyun , Jung Yong-hwa , Hwang Kwanghee , Kim Bum-soo , Lim Seul-ong , Jo Jung-suk , Ha Dong-kyun and Akdong Musician . The profit from the tour was donated to the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster .

Two months after their tour, IU performed for the first time in the United States , in front of 42,000 visitors at the KCON Music Festival in Los Angeles . August Brown of the Los Angeles Times wrote, IU went through their lively stage performances the format of K-Pop - World Stars . IU expressed her tension prior to the performance in an interview with Billboard magazine's Jeff Benjamin : “I always get nervous when performing at international events ... I think I should learn English for my next visit to the US. It is overwhelming not being able to communicate with fans ... "

Throughout the year, IU worked with a number of other artists and scored top ten hits: Not Spring, Love, or Cherry Blossoms ( 봄, 사랑, 벚꽃 말고 Bom, Sarang, Beotkkot Malgo ), High4's first single for IU wrote the lyrics and sang part of it herself, peaked at number one on the Gaon and Billboard K-Pop charts. Anxious Heart ( 애타는 마음 Aeta-nine Maeum ) by Ulala Session and IU, which was recorded back in 2012 but was not released until 2014 when the group's lead singer passed away, reached number four on the Gaon charts. Sing for Me ( 노래 불러 줘요 Norae Bulleojwoyo ), a song released on god's eighth studio album , peaked at number nine on the charts. Sogyeokdong ( 소격동 ), by Seo Taiji reached number four and When Would It Be ( 언제쯤 이면 Eonjejjeumimyeon ), a duet with Yoon Hyun-sang , reached number nine on the charts. After Not Spring, Love, or Cherry Blossoms topped the Billboard Korea K-Pop Hot 100 , IU topped the all-time chart with five number-one songs and as a singer with most weeks at the top of the charts since inception in September 2011.

2015: Producer and Chat-Shire

IU 2015 in Hong Kong

Beginning in 2015, the television series Producer started , in which IU played a leading role alongside Kim Soo-hyun , Cha Tae-hyun and Gong Hyo-jin . The Mockumentary was one of the most anticipated television series of the season in South Korea. IU played a pop diva who starred in a variety show to improve her public image. The appearance of her figure was perceived as cold, about which IU said that she could identify with her figure. The series and IU's portrayal were initially moderately received, but received better reviews and higher audience numbers over the course of the year. IU sang two self-written songs as Cindy in the series, Twenty Three and Heart ( 마음 Maeum ). Both songs later appeared as bonus tracks on their album Chat-Shire .

After filming for Producer was over, IU took part in the biennial music festival of the variety show Infinite Challenge . The participating singer-songwriters get one of the moderators as a partner to write a song for the festival. The preparation for the festival was broadcast over seven episodes. IU got Park Myeong-su as a partner. Together they recorded the song Leon , inspired by the film Léon - The Professional . 40,000 spectators attended the festival on August 13, 2015 in the Alpensia Jumping Park . There both performed the song live for the first time. The television broadcast had a rate of 21.1%. Leon appeared online for download after it aired and was included on the festival album. The song peaked at number one on the South Korean Gaon charts.

IU's seventh EP , Chat-Shire , was released for download on October 23 and as a physical album on October 27. As a producer, IU had greater creative control over the album; she wrote the lyrics for all seven songs on the EP and composed five of the songs herself or in collaboration. The main song, Twenty-Three ( 스물셋 Seumul-set ; not to be confused with the bonus song Twenty Three ), reached number one on the South Korean charts when it was released and many other songs on the album reached the top 10. Chat-Shire also reached number 4 on the Billboard Top World Albums Chart. Billboard's Jeff Benjamin described the EP as a must-have. It contains IU's most personal music to date and The Shower ( 푸르 던 Pureudeon ) stands out. At the end of the year, Billboard magazine Chat-Shire named the sixth best K-Pop album in 2015, declaring that IU knew how to extrapolate yesterday's sound to amazing results.

Despite the positive reviews and the album's success, Chat-Shire was controversially criticized because of the lyrics of Zezé and the audio samples in the bonus song Twenty Three . Zezé was inspired by the best-selling novel My Little Orange Tree by the Brazilian author José Mauro de Vasconcelos . Spokesman for the South Korean publisher of the novel, Dongnyok, accused IU of interpreting and portraying the five-year-old protagonist of the story as a "sex object". IU publicly apologized by saying that she did not want to portray Zezé as a sexual object. The publisher also apologized for not having recognized the freedom of expression. IU was also accused of using audio samples from Britney Spears ' Gimme More in the bonus title Twenty Three . Both IU's agency, LOEN Entertainment, and the South Korean distributor of Spears' music, Sony Music, said they wanted to check whether it was an audio sample from Gimme More . The song's composer allegedly used a file he had acquired a long time ago and the source of which was unclear. LOEN apologized for not being careful with the album production.

Instead of promoting the album through appearances in music shows as usual, IU went on tour in November and December 2015. The tour started in Seoul on November 21st , went through Busan , Daegu and Gwangju before completing the tour on December 31st, back in Seoul. During this time IU released the compilation album Smash Hits for the Taiwanese market and had performances and autograph sessions in China , Hong Kong and Taiwan . Smash Hits was published by Warner Music Taiwan and rose to the top of the Taiwanese K-pop chart KKBOX . IU also moderated the year-end music event ( Gayo Daejeon ) on the SBS channel , alongside Shin Dong-yup . In response to their decision to host, the producers said IU was highly valued for her musical talent, even apart from her image as Korea's sweet sister. Ize magazine named IU Person of the Year for her achievements during the year , while GQ Korea named her Woman of the Year .

Her fourth studio album Palette was released in April 2017. For the title track Palette , she collaborated with rapper G-Dragon . The music magazine Billboard emphasized and praised IU's creative control over the album, which allows the listener to learn more about the singer. At the end of the year, Palette won the Melon Music Award in the Album of the Year category . The Billboard named Palette the best K-Pop album of 2017 because it was impressive and acoustically diverse and thus proves that a musician's personal experience can lead to her greatest work to date. IU at the premiere of the film Little Forest (2018)

In addition, she will go on a world tour to celebrate the anniversary, starting in Busan on October 28th. The last concert will be in December 25, Taipei ( Taiwan held).

After Caitlin Kelley of Forbes , Bbibbi targets IUs envious people and the gossip press. The title alone is the beep of a warning. She sings, "If you cross this line, it is a violation". In doing so, she also takes their perspective - "I wonder if she knows that everyone is gossiping about her" - and thus expresses her mockery. In the song she repeatedly sings typical Internet comments and addresses these commentators with the line "Hello stup-ID". A play on words consisting of stupid , the English word for 'stupid', and ID, referring to the IDs of users on websites. According to Tamar Herman from Billboard magazine, the song shows how IU has become a self-confident young woman. As before Palette and Twenty-Three , IU deals with their identity here too.

On March 11, 2019, the music video for Lovedrunk ( 술 이 달다 ) by Epik High , in which IU plays the leading role, was released. Epik High's Tablo said it looked a lot more like martial arts - short film than your typical music video.
