1988–2009: Early life and debut with Big Bang

G-Dragon at MTV Fast Forward in Thailand 2007

G-Dragon was born in 1988 under the name Kwon Ji-yong in Seoul , South Korea . Ji-yong was interested in music from an early age. At the age of five he became part of a children's group, Little Roora, with whom he released a Christmas album in 1993. The group's contract was terminated shortly thereafter, which the artist remembers as "shocking". At the age of eight, however, he was discovered again when his mother encouraged him to take part in a dance competition during a ski trip, which he won. The organizer of the competition Lee Soo-man , founder of the record label SM Entertainment , signed him immediately. At the age of 13 he left the label again because he was unsure of his future. In the Middle School Ji-yong was a friend of the Wu-Tang Clan attention. Then he began to take lessons in rapping . With the People's Crew he released the two albums Korea 2001 and Flex in the early 2000s . Thanks to the albums, the boy caught the attention of hip-hop duo Jinusean , who recommended the boy to YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun-suk , who signed him. In the first year as a trainee, however, Ji-yong was basically only allowed to wipe the studio and pass the water bottle to other artists during dance training, as he remembers. Together with trainee Dong Young-bae ( Taeyang ), Ji-yong was supposed to found the duo GDYB , but the plans were dropped. Instead, both became part of Big Bang and debuted in 2006. The selection of members was recorded in a documentary.

In August 2006, G-Dragon debuted with Big Bang. The first studio album by the group Bigbang Vol.1 was released in December of the same year and also includes his first song as a solo artist, This Love , a cover of the single of the same name by the American band Maroon 5 . Four singles were previously released; La La La , We belong together , Forever with You and Dirty Cash . G-Dragon wrote seven songs on the album. With the band's second album, Always , he also began to get more involved in the production and songwriting. There are several songs on the album in which he participated, e.g. B. Lies ( kor. 거짓말 ; Geojitmal ), Big Bang's first number one hit. Other singles in which he was involved, such as Last Farewell ( kor. 마지막 인사 ; Majimak Insa ) from the album Hot Issue and Day by Day ( kor. 하루 하루 ; Haru Haru ) from Stand Up were also chart toppers.

2009: Solo career, first album Heartbreaker and allegations of plagiarism

G-Dragon during the BIGBANG Alive Galaxy Tour 2012 in September 2013

In parallel to his activities with Big Bang, G-Dragon began working on his solo career. After he Taeyang in the production of his solo album Hot had helped, he took his own version of Taeyangs lead single Only Look At Me ( kor. 나만 바라 봐 ; Naman Barabwa ) that he Only Look At Me Part 2 called and which was only published online. Together with Taeyang and Big Bang's second rapper TOP , he was involved in the song Super Fly by singer Lexy . G-Dragon also worked with the Japanese boy band W-inds in May 2009 . for their single Rain Is Fallin '/ Hybrid Dream .

G-Dragon got off to a real start with his first solo album Heartbreaker , which hit stores in August 2009, just in time for his birthday on the 18th, after it had originally been announced for May. to coincide with his 21st (Korean years: 22nd) birthday. For Heartbreaker , G-Dragon worked with artists and producers from YG Entertainment, including Teddy from 1TYM , Taeyang, Kush and singers CL and Sandara Park from 2NE1 . Spurred on by the success of the lead single Heartbreaker , an electro pop song, and G-Dragons' image change to the blond-haired pop prince, over 200,000 records were sold. With the album, G-Dragon won the coveted "Album of the Year 2009" award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2009. The second single Breath reached the top 20 in the charts, while other songs - The Leaders , A Boy , Hello and She's Gone topped various music charts in Korea.

Shortly after Heartbreaker was released, G-Dragon was faced with plagiarism allegations from Sony Music that his two songs Heartbreaker and Butterfly were plagiarism of Flo Rida's Right Round and Oasis She's Electric . However, EMI , the record label that sells Right Round , released a statement after EMI saw no similarities between the songs. On March 6, 2010, YG Entertainment announced that Flo Rida had agreed to collaborate with G-Dragon and a remix version of Heartbreaker was released in which Flo Rida raps. He can also be seen in the accompanying promotional video.

As a promotion for his album G-Dragon held his first solo concert Shine a Light in the Olympic Park in Seoul in December 2009. The concert took care again for a sensation because G-Dragon was accused of having acted too freely when he for the song Breath a Suggested bed scene with a dancer. This went so far that the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family filed a request with the prosecutor. This should investigate whether G-Dragon or YG Entertainment have violated regulations regarding immoral behavior at events. On March 15, 2010, all allegations against the artist were dropped.

2010–2011: GD & TOP, GG and G-Dragons marijuana scandal

GD & TOP 2011

In November 2010, YG Entertainment announced that G-Dragon and Bandmate TOP would release an album together. Before that, the two promoted their songs at an event in Times Square in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, which was broadcast worldwide on YouTube . The album includes three singles, High High , Oh Yeah and Knock Out , which were released prior to the album. The singles were very successful - High High topped the charts while Oh Yeah and Knock Out took second and third place. The album itself was released on Christmas Eve and started from number 1 in the Gaon Charts , u. a. thanks to 200,000 pre-orders alone.

Together with Park Myung Soo , G-Dragon briefly formed the duo GG on the occasion of the Infinite Challenge Seohae Ahn Highway Song Festival 2011. The duo released the song Fired Up ( kor. 바람 났어 , Baram nasso ) featuring Park Bom by 2NE1 on June 2nd 2011, which achieved an "All Kill" in various Korean charts.

On October 5, 2011, the media reported that G-Dragon had tested positive for marijuana. While drug offenses are not taken lightly in Korea, it was G-Dragon's first conflict with the law and the marijuana tested was only half a cigarette, so charges against him were dropped. His explanation is that he accepted a cigarette from a stranger at a party in Japan, but threw it away after realizing that it was not a normal cigarette.

The scandal caused quite a stir among the Korean public, so all activities were put on hold. Yg Entertainment released a statement that G-Dragon is seriously reflecting on what he did. But since he was acquitted, he did not lose any advertising contracts and later appeared with Big Bang at the MTV EMAs in London.

2012–2013: The mini album One of a Kind , 4-Dome-Tour in Japan and Coup d'etat

G-Dragon started 2012 by rapping with TOP for a song by singer Pixie Lott , which is included on her Japanese album.

He also followed up on his birthday on August 24th with the single One Of A Kind , which earned him two "Best Hiphop / Rap Song of the Year" awards at the Korean Music Awards and the Rhythmer Awards . On September 1st, the first single That XX was released for the new mini-album. The song topped the music charts and achieved an "all-kill". The mini-album One of a Kind followed on September 15th in digital form and hit stores on September 18th. The album was very popular because all songs were able to position themselves at the top of the various Korean charts. The album also made it to number 1 on the Billboard World Albums Chart and peaked at number 161 on the US Billboard 200 . By the end of the year the album had sold over 200,000 times, making it the best-selling album by a solo artist in South Korea and overturning its predecessor Heartbreaker .

On November 30th, G-Dragon won the award for "Best Solo Artist" at the 14th Mnet Asian Music Awards , followed by the "Record of the Year '" award for One Of A Kind at the 22nd Seoul Music Awards on November 31st . January 2013.

On September 2nd and 5th, the musician released his second album Coup d'Etat online in two parts, the CD release took place on September 13th. The heart of the album is the track NiLiria , for which he won Grammy Award winner and rap legend Missy Elliott . As a promotion, the two presented the song at the K-Con in Los Angeles . Meanwhile, the music videos for Coup d'Etat and Crooked have been uploaded to Youtube to match the online release of the album parts . Coup d'Etat Part 1 and Part 2 topped the Korean charts and a few days after their release made it to number 23 and 59 on the iTunes Top Albums chart in the USA.

2014–2016: Collaborations and Peaceminusone

In 2015, G-Dragon became a testimonial for Airbnb

On November 14, 2014, G-Dragons label YG Entertainment released a picture with the inscription "Who's next?" Together with his Big Bang colleague Taeyang , G-Dragon worked on the song Good Boy , which became a great success. The song was actually intended for the upcoming album by the boy band Big Bang, before the decision was made to release it as part of a hip-hop project. In 2014, G-Dragon and his colleague CL worked with the US DJs Skrillex and Diplo . On December 15th the song Dirty Vibe was released. The English-language electro song differs greatly from the previous music of the two K-pop artists, but was still positively received.

In April 2015, Big Bang released their long-awaited comeback and began a world tour. In the summer, G-Dragon opened an art exhibition called PeaceMinusone: Beyond the Stage .

Since 2017: Kwon Ji Yong and Act III, MOTTE

At the end of May 2017, G-Dragon announced its second EP Kwon Ji Yong , which was released on June 8th in the form of a USB stick. The unconventional format led to a discussion about whether the EP was entitled to appear in the official South Korean album charts. The Gaon Charts originally decided not to count the EP as a physical album, as the USB stick only had download links to the respective songs. They defined an album as a sound carrier on which the music must be located immediately. However, this decision was later reversed. The album was the first ever Korean album to top the iTunes charts in 46 countries, including the American and European charts. The EP sold over a million copies in China in six days. On June 10th, GD began its second world tour in Seoul, which ended on October 8th and was attended by over 650,000 people in 29 cities. On February 27, 2018, G-Dragon began his 21-month military service in South Korea, which he ended in October 2019.

Fashion and music

Fashion and peaceminusone

G-Dragons fashion brand Peaceminusone

G-Dragon is named the most fashionable member of Big Bang by Korean media. His role as a trend setter in South Korea has been recognized by awards such as "Style Icon of 2008" and "Most Influential Men of 2008" by Arena magazine . Fashion icon Kang Dong-won also referred to G-Dragons' influence and referred to him as a "fashionista".

During Heartbreaker's promotions , the rapper dyed his hair blonde and his haircut was imitated so many times that it became one of the top hairstyles of the year. The triangular scarves that the musician often wore also became a trend among teenagers who gave them the name "Big Bang Neckerchief".

His musical and fashion success brought G-Dragon to the cover of Vogue Korea fashion magazine in 2013 on the occasion of its 17th anniversary. The August issue was available for sale with three different covers, each of which shows G-Dragon with one of the most famous supermodels in South Korea: Kim Sung-hee , Soo-joo and Park Ji-hye .

In October 2016, G-Dragon founded the fashion brand Peaceminusone with his stylist Gee Eun .

Musical style

G-Dragon took inspiration from the Wu-Tang Clan , Kanye West , Fabolous , Jinusean and called Pharrell Williams his musical hero. During Big Bang's early days, the group was primarily marketed as a hip-hop group, later electronic dance music was added, which started a trend in Korea. Accordingly, G-Dragon's first album Heartbreaker was also very much influenced by hip-hop, dance music and R&B. Since the duo GD & TOP consists of two rappers, the hip-hop sound dominates on their album GD & TOP . G-Dragon has had a free hand in the production of his music since his first album, whereby he v. a. works closely with YG Entertainment's songwriters and composers Teddy, Cush and Choice32. For his second studio album Coup d'Etat he also brought international names like Diplo and Baauer on board .

The press has been largely positive about G-Dragons publications. The Korean Times praised G-Dragon's lyrics, which are often structured like a story, and called the artist a "genius singer-songwriter", even if G-Dragon rejects the label "Genie". G-Dragon received an award for his compositions in 2008 when cultural critics and representatives of the music industry chose him as the composer, "whose future they anticipate the most." His rap lyrics also earned him the top spot as "Most God-like" rapper in Japan. In addition, G-Dragon found itself on the Forbes list as Most Hardworking Idol and made it to the list of "Korea 2030 Power Leaders."
