Dong Young-bae ( kor. 동영배 , born May 18, 1988 in Uijeongbu , South Korea ) is a South Korean pop and R&B singer and model. On stage he is known under the pseudonym Taeyang ( kor. 태양 ) and Sol (spelling: SOL).

After appearing in the music video for A-yo by South Korean rapper Jinusean , he also signed his apprenticeship contract with YG Entertainment at the age of 12. After six years of vocal and dance training, he made his debut in 2006 as part of the South Korean boy group Big Bang , which had many successes.

life and career

Taeyang got his first experience in 2003 when he took over the rap part of the song Prayer from Labelmate Wheesung . It was originally planned that he and the current band partner G-Dragon should form a duo under the name GDYB . However, the project was not implemented. Instead, four other trainees were brought in, TOP , Daesung , Seungri and Hyun Seung , to create the Big Bang group . Hyun Seung was the only one who did not meet the requirements and left YG. The remaining five boys were given stage names and so Dong Young-bae became Taeyang ( kor. 태양 ; sun ), although Taekwon was originally discussed. Taeyang had many successes with Big Bang and the band is still one of the most successful South Korean boy bands.

In parallel to his activities with Big Bang, Taeyang published his own material. His first extended play , which was called Hot , he released on May 22, 2008 and sold more than 50,000 units. His first single followed on October 15, 2009, followed by the second, Wedding Dress , on November 13, 2009.

Taeyang released his first studio album under the title Solar on July 1, 2010. One month later, in August, he released his first international album in several countries, which was called Solar International . The album Solar sold almost 85,000 times in South Korea, making it his most successful record.

For the Japanese debut of Big Bang, he chose the artist name Sol ( proper spelling : SOL). In the course of Big Bang's Japan promotions, he also worked with the Japanese singer Thelma Aoyama and published his first Japanese collaboration Fall in Love , which, however , had to be satisfied with number 29 in the Oricon charts and up to 5,000 times in Japan could sell.

Since 2012 Taeyang has been working on a second studio album, which is expected to be released in September 2013, but has not yet been released. YG Entertainment's CEO Yang Hyun-suk gave Taeyang a free hand in the production of the studio album for the first time. However, a single called Ringa Linga was released in November 2013.

His second studio album Rise was released in June 2014 and his third White Night in August 2017.

Taeyang has been dating the South Korean actress Min Hyo-rin since 2013 . The couple met on the set of 1AM . The two married on February 3, 2018 in Seoul.

He began his military service on March 12, 2018.
