Thelma Aoyama

Thelma Aoyama ( Japanese 青山 テ ル マ ; Aoyama Teruma ) (born October 27, 1987 in Yamatotakada , Nara Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese pop and R&B singer. Her paternal grandfather is from Trinidad and Tobago .

life and career

Thelma attended Osaka International School as a student for six years . At age 12, she and her family moved to Torrance , California , where she lived for two years and attended Calle Mayor Middle School . She only moved back to Japan in the winter of 2002 and then lived in Tokyo . Here she attended the American School in Japan and has been a student at Sophia University since 2010 .

Her first musical experience she gained by a collaboration with DS455 recorded and the single Summer Paradise: Risin 'to tha' Sun published. The single reached number 46 on the Oricon charts in its first week . On September 5, 2007 Thelma made her solo debut with her first single One Way , but the single only reached number 98 in the charts. Two weeks later they then collaborated with J-Soul and SoulJa , released the single Koko ni Iru yo ( Japanese こ こ に い る よ ) together and landed at number 6 in the charts in their third week of sales. In addition, the single was able to sell more than 100,000 times.

Four months later they gave another collaboration with SoulJa and released their second single Soba ni Iru ne ( Japanese そ ば に い る ね ) together. The single stayed in the charts for 51 weeks and landed at number 1 in its second week of sales; it was able to sell more than 465,000 copies, making it its most successful record. In addition, the song is the most successful download single in Japan with more than 8.7 million legal downloads (as of November 2008).

She also released her debut album, which she called Diary , on March 26, 2008 and hit number 3 on the charts in its first week of sales, with 116,453 units sold. After 48 weeks in the charts, the album sold almost 374,000 times.

On February 11, 2009, she released her first compilation album, under the name Love !: Thelma Love Song Collection , and unexpectedly the compilation landed at the top of the charts. The compilation, which only has nine tracks, also features a cover by the US music legend Janet Jackson , Again . The compilation could sell up to 100,000 times.

Over time, however, her popularity fell, and with it her sales figures, and she tried new collaborations. Among other things, she released the single Fall in Love on January 27, 2010 , a collaboration with the South Korean singer Taeyang (from the group Bigbang ). In Japan it is marketed under the pseudonym Sol , therefore the marketing was also called Aoyama Thelma x Sol from Bigbang . The single, however, only reached 29th place as the highest position and only sold 5,000 times. In May 2011 she tried a South Korean band called 4minute , they released the single Without U together , which only ended up at number 125, with 553 units sold.
