Career

2003 to 2005: First steps into the music industry and the Rose era

At the age of 14 Miho ( 美 穂 ) wrote her own texts and composed her own pieces of music. She made her debut in the music scene in September 2003, where she was represented by the Reggae Disco Rockers under her pseudonym Miliyah as a collaboration entitled Cherry, Oh Baby on the album Reggae Magic . A year later she gave a collaboration with Dohzi-T , entitled Shōri no Megami ( 勝利 の 女神 ). They could also be seen in the commercials for which the song was used. This enabled Miliyah to gain attention and finally she released her debut single on September 8, 2004, under Sony Music Japan , entitled Never Let Go / Yozora (Never let go / 夜空 ). The record company distributed a limited number of CDs in stores, but due to increasing demand, production was doubled and the single was able to reach # 15 on the Oricon charts and sell a total of 45,000 times. The track Yozora is a sample from Buddah Brands Ningen-hatudenjyo . After her second single Beautiful , which was a moderate success, she released her third single Dear Lonely Girl ( デ ィ ア ・ ロ ン リ ー ガ ー ル ) in 2005 . This song is also a sample taken from Marvin Gayes ( Sexual Healing ). The B-side on the single Dreaming Under the Moon was the first song that Miliyah wrote at the age of 13. With 50,000 units sold, Dear Lonely Girl is Miliyah's most successful solo single. The fourth single with the title Jōnetsu ( ジ ョ ウ ネ ツ ) was again a sample, taken from UA 's title of the same name and was like Dear Lonely Girl a successful hit. The success led to her first studio album Rose , which was released on October 26, 2005. The album debuted at # 2 on the Oricon charts and sold almost 250,000 copies in total, marking its first major milestone in the Japanese music industry.

2006 to 2008: Diamond Princess , Tokyo Star , Best Destiny era

After the success of her first studio album, Miliyah continued to release self-written songs that were independent of samples. These include the singles Sotsugyō ( ソ ツ ギ ョ ウ ) (February 2006), Last Summer (July 2006), I Will (September 2006) and Eyes on You (February 2007). The success of the singles was moderate and from it they released, on March 7, 2007, their second studio album entitled Diamond Princess . The studio album landed at # 5 on the Oricon charts and sold more than 100,000 times, which meant that she could not follow the success of Rose , but maintained her popularity. After the following singles My Girl and Love Is ... , the single Lalala / Futurechecka was released, which came along in collaboration with many different artists. For more than 250,000 legal downloads, the song Lalala was awarded platinum.

This was followed by their twelfth single on February 27, 2008, entitled 19 Memories . The song is a sample of the song Sweet 19 Blues , which is a popular song by Namie Amuro . What is special about this is that the song was awarded double platinum for 500,000 legal downloads of the ringtone and platinum for 250,000 legal downloads of the song. Two months later she released her third studio album, Tokyo Star , which sold more than 200,000 copies, building on the success of her debut album. The success continued with the single Sayōnara Baby / Koishiteru (SAYONARA ベ イ ベ ー / 恋 シ テ ル ), as the song Sayōnara Baby went platinum for 250,000 legal downloads. The song Koishiteru is a sample from Shanice's I Love Your Smile . Due to the success of the samples, she released her first compilation based on her samples, entitled Best Destiny , on November 5, 2008. As the first of her phonograms, this release reached the top spot on the Oricon charts in Japan; this made her the youngest artist, at the age of 19, to place a compilation at the top of the Oricon charts.

2009 to 2011: Commercial high point

After her single 20 - Cry (January 2009), she released the collaboration Love Forever with Shota Shimizu in May of that year and thus gained even greater attention, because the single reached the highest position in the daily Oricon charts on four subsequent days and was able to do so attach to # 5 in the first week; In addition, the single sold almost 100,000 times in CD format. At # 70, the single was also both artists' first entry into the annual top 100 of the Oricon charts. Due to the success, she released her fourth studio album entitled Ring , which, with almost 400,000 units sold, is one of her most successful recordings. The promo single for the studio album "Aitai" (German: I would like to meet you ) was also a commercial success. For legal downloads of the complete song and the ringtone, the song was awarded triple platinum, each at least 750,000 represents legal downloads for the song and associated ringtone. The music video for “Aitai” was then on the CD + DVD version of the single “Why” that was followed in November of that year. "Why" is a double A-Side single that had the title "Destiny" as another A-Side, which was used as the theme song for the Japanese version of New Moon - Bite at Noon . The single's title song of the same name was awarded gold for 100,000 legal downloads.

Another collaboration with Shota Shimizu followed in February 2010, which is entitled "Forever Love" and was able to build on the success of "Love Forever". This single is regarded as the answer song for the first collaboration and was awarded double platinum for at least 500,000 legal downloads and triple platinum for at least 750,000 ringtones sold. A month later, Katō released the single "Bye Bye", with which she was able to reach the top position in the RIAJ Digital Track Charts for the first time . Her concert video album "Ring Tour 2009" (May), which sold more than 50,000 copies, was able to hold the top position in the Oricon music DVD charts for two weeks in chronological order. The video album includes her final concert of her "Ring Tour 2009" at Nippon Budōkan . The following single, "Last Love," which was released in June of that year, went platinum for 250,000 legal downloads. In July of that year she released her fifth studio album entitled "Heaven", which is her first studio album to reach the top ranking. The studio album sold more than 250,000 times. The promo single for the studio album was called "XOXO" and sampled the song "Robinson" by the Japanese rock group Spitz . "XOXO" and a track from the studio album "Baby I See You", which is a duet with Verbal ( M-Flo ), were both awarded gold for at least 100,000 legal downloads. With the singer Ai , she released the collaboration "Stronger" in October of that year. At the end of the year, a video compilation entitled "Miliyah the Clips 2004-2010" was released in December of that year. The video compilation peaked at # 4 on the Oricon music DVD charts, stayed there for 26 weeks, and sold nearly 60,000 copies. On the same day she released the digital single "Only Holy", which was included as a limited CD in the video compilation.

"Yūsha-tachi" was the name of the single that was released in March 2011. It was awarded gold for legal downloads. The double A-side single "Desire / Baby! Baby! Baby!", On the other hand, sold around 10,000 times in physical format and was an indicator of the decline in its sales figures. There are no sales figures for downloads because neither of the two songs received an award. The song "Baby! Baby! Baby!" Sampled the song "Linda Linda" from the Japanese punk band The Blue Hearts . This was followed in July of that year by the third collaborative single with Shota Shimizu, which was called "Believe", but could not even begin to build on the success of their first two collaborations, but was awarded gold for 100,000 legal downloads. In August of that year she finally published her first compilation " M Best ", the subject of which relates to her entire career. The compilation reached the top ranking, sold more than 300,000 copies and was the 19th best-selling album in Japan in 2011. A month later, in September, she published her first novella , entitled "Umareta Mama no Watashi wo" ( 生 ま れ た ま ま の 私 を ). The novella is about a 22-year-old nude artist who cannot find love. Their tour with the title "" Eternal Heaven "Tour 2010-2011" was released in November of that year as a concert video album in DVD and for the first time in BD format with the same title . The concert here is the finale of this tour, which was recorded in the Ōsaka-jō Hall . At the end of the year, she released the single "Roman", but there was no commercial success.

The song was heavily promoted, making it platinum with 250,000 legal downloads. She then released her single Lovers Part II in October of that year , which is a collaboration with Wakadanna . The following month she published her first novel , titled Ugly, and her sixth studio album, titled True Lovers . This promo single was released digitally a month before “True Lovers” in October. Her concert video album "M Best Tour 2011" was released on December 12th of that year, representing her final concert of the tour of the same name in the Yokohama Arena .

With other commercially unsuccessful singles, Emotion (June 2013), Lonely Hearts (October 2013) and Love / Affection / Kamisama (Love / Affection / 神 様 ) (January 2014), she finally released her seventh studio album Loveland in February 2014 . For the song Kamisama , a short novella with the same title, written by Kato, was published. Because of the many successful collaborations between Miliyah and Shota Shimizu, both artists released a joint album called The Best at the end of their collaboration .
